Two Koreas agree to hold September summit in Pyongyang

Two Koreas agree to hold September summit in Pyongyang

"Kim said that he would like to build on this trust to end the 70 years of hostilities between the North and the USA within Trump's first term, improve relations and achieve denuclearization", Chung said.

'Chairman Kim said that although the dialogue between the USA and North Korea is experiencing some difficulties, his trust in President Trump continues, especially at times like this, ' according to Chung Eui-yong, South Korea's director of national security and the leader of the envoys.

Mr Chung's visit to Pyongyang came amid growing concerns over a nuclear stalemate between North Korea and the United States, after talks stalled due to both sides refusing to give in to each other's demands.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has renewed his commitment to denuclearisation and promised to cooperate with the United States in talks, according to a South Korean envoy who met him in Pyongyang.

Kim, however, expressed to Chung that he was frustrated by skepticism in the worldwide community over his commitment to denuclearisation.

Chung reported that Kim said he wishes for North Korea and the United States to put an end to their seven decades of hostile relations before the end of Trump's first term.

Last week U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis had said joint drills with Seoul would no longer be suspended, following lack of progress on North Korea denuclearization.

US officials involved in the latest negotiations have said North Korea has refused to even start discussions about defining denuclearisation or other key terms such as "verifiable" and "irreversible", and has insisted the United States must first agree to simultaneous steps to reduce economic pressure.

"Kim also made it clear that he needs some kind of proof Trump has abandoned the U.S.'s hostile policy before moving toward denuclearization".

Chung cites Kim as saying dismantling at the Tongchang-ri rocket site mean no future long-range missile tests would take place because it's his only long-range rocket testing site.

Mr. Kim told Mr. Chung he still had faith in Mr. Trump despite diplomatic setbacks, and emphasised that he has not once talked negatively about Mr. Trump to anyone, including his closest advisors.

The North Korean leader reaffirmed his commitment to denuclearization, also promising to continue working with the United States to that end.

"He wanted to end some 70 years of animosity between North Korea and the United States and achieve denuclearization within President Trump's first term", Chung said of his conversation with Kim.

"The discussions at the summit will also be centered around issues on the permanent settlement of peace and common prosperity on the Korean Peninsula as well as, particularly, practical measures to realize denuclearization on the Peninsula", he said.

"He said he's pre-emptively taken steps necessary for denuclearisation and wants to see these goodwill measures being met with goodwill measures", Chung said.

They presented South Korea's blueprint for economic cooperation, including reconnecting severed cross-border railways and roads, and urged Kim to take steps toward denuclearization.

Not only that they manged to hear directly from the regime's leader, where Pyongyang stands on denuclearization and peace efforts.

Seoul also wants a trilateral summit among the countries, or a four-nation meeting that also includes Beijing, to declare a formal end to the 1950-53 Korean War.

The team brings with them, details including date, venue and topics for the hotly anticipated inter-Korean summit.

Trump spoke to Moon on the evening before Chung's trip and asked Moon to act as "chief negotiator" between Washington and Pyongyang, the spokesman said.
