NFL Jets deal Bridgewater to Saints, pin hopes on rookie

Teddy Bridgewater's brief time with the Jets ended Wednesday, with the team reportedly trading him to the Saints. The trade frees things up for Sam Darnold to start, while also netting NY a third-rounder after paying Bridgewater a $500,000 signing bonus in free agency. With the trade, the Jets have now cleared the path for Darnold to start Week One of the 2018 National Football League season, as well as manage to get some sort of value back for Bridgewater, who has played well in the preseason. They found a buyer in the Saints, who were looking for an upgrade at backup behind Drew Brees.

It forces Vikings fans to ask if they could have gotten a similar return had they signed Bridgewater.

"We are very pleased to obtain a young player with quite a bit of playing experience in Teddy Bridgewater", Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said.

Brees is now under contract through 2019 after signing a two-year extension worth a reported $50 million this offseason. "He's a successful quarterback and we know he will be a great addition to our quarterback room". ESPN notes Darnold "now looks to be Jets opening-night starter". We wish him nothing but the best.

Bridgewater arguably outplayed Darnold this summer, going 28 of 38 for 316 yards, two TDs and one interception.

Savage was solid but unspectacular throughout the preseason. He led the Saints in rushing in each of the first three preseason games, but he also committed four turnovers in the first half of the second exhibition game.

For tonight's game, don't expect to see Darnold play or even veteran quarterback Josh McCown for that matter.

As a quarterback, he has demonstrated potential, if not reliability.
