Syrian army preparing phased Idlib assault

Syrian army preparing phased Idlib assault

The UN director of humanitarian operations, John Ging, warned that a major offensive in Idlib "has the potential to create a humanitarian emergency at a scale not yet seen" in the seven-year civil war.

In an interview Monday night with the Beirut-based Al-Mayadeen television channel, Hatami said the agreement included the rehabilitation of Syria's defence industry and assured Iran would provide "good service".

"According to military experts the group was brought to sea to support the offensive of the Syrian army in the..." The strikes were launched in connection with a chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma that killed dozens of people.

The foreign ministers' meeting comes amid speculation that Syrian forces backed by Russian Federation and Iran are preparing for an offensive to retake one of the last rebel strongholds.

The Izvestia newspaper said Russian Federation had gathered its largest naval presence in the Mediterranean Sea since it intervened in Syria in 2015 turning the tide in Assad's favor.

In an effort to restore calm in the region and improve the humanitarian situation in war-torn Syria, three guarantor states Turkey, Iran, and Russian Federation launched the Astana process on January 23, 2017, establishing de-escalation zones.

"The Secretary-General once again reaffirms that any use of chemical weapons is totally unacceptable". Russia's navy buildup around Syria represents the biggest since Moscow kicked off its intervention in Syria with its sole aircraft carrier in 2015.

This week Russian media reported Moscow is reinforcing its military presence in the Mediterranean near Syria.

"The most important element of the deal is the rebuilding of the Syrian armed forces and defence industries so that they can regain their full capacity".

Up to 11 Russian warships have crossed the Bosphorus as tensions between the USA and Syria continue to rise.

If Russian ships were to engage the United States, "the USA would use its overwhelming airpower in the region, and every single Russian vessel on the surface will turn into a hulk in a very short time", Lamrani said.

Russian Federation has made dubious and falsifiable claims about its air defenses in Syria, and could continue down that path as a way of saving face after the U.S., once again, strikes its Syrian ally as if Russia's forces inspired no fear.
