GOVERNOR: Democrats face off in Florida gubernatorial race

GOVERNOR: Democrats face off in Florida gubernatorial race

Ron DeSantis appeared on Fox News' America's Newsroom Wednesday morning following Gillum's unexpected primary victory.

"The last thing we need to do is to monkey this up by trying to embrace a socialist agenda", DeSantis said.

DeSantis rode Trump's endorsement to victory in the GOP race, underscoring the president's broad appeal in Republican primaries.

In less than 24 hours, the bigotry has already begun to jump out after Florida Democratic gubernatorial nominee Andrew Gillum secured the party nomination.

As with many "Tea Party" candidates who snagged unexpected nominations in Republican primaries back in the early 2010's, more radical candidates seldom fare well in a general election, and Gillum's win puts Democrats in a hard position going into Florida's November election.

DeSantis beat out Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam, who had seemingly built up the run for governor his entire adult life after being elected to office as a 22-year-old. "To characterize it as anything else is absurd".

If he wins, Gillum would be Florida's first African-American governor.

Gillum is only 39, and up until Tuesday night was running fourth among potential Democratic contenders in most polls. "DeSantis can do the bidding of big business and big lobbyists and Donald Trump and his divisive rhetoric".

"On the first day of the general election, Ron DeSantis showed Floridians who he really is", said Democratic Governors Association spokesman David Turner said.

DeSantis said Gillum was an "articulate spokesman" for "far left views".

"I don't even know (DeSantis). but as long as Trump says so", he said.

Gillum also immediately responded to a tweet by President Trump calling Gillum a "failed socialist mayor", telling Trump the country and state need "decency, hope, and leadership" and asking the president to tag Gillum the next time he tweets about him so Gillum can see it.

Florida and Arizona are both closely watched states, featuring growing minority populations that have bolstered Democratic candidates and Republican electorates that have grown older and more conservative. That's not going to work, that's not going to be good for Florida. He will attack Gillum's record as mayor of Tallahassee, which includes an ongoing FBI investigation of possible corruption at city hall related to development deals.

Gillum ultimately won by 34.2 percent of the vote, with former Congresswoman Gwen Graham narrowly behind at 31.4 percent of the vote. Graham had been expected to win, albeit in a close race. He ran for Senate in 2016 but dropped out when Republican Senator Marco Rubio shut down his presidential campaign and ran for re-election. And Florida, in particular, will have a wide slate of Democratic women candidates on the ballot this fall, with 16 of 27 congressional races featuring a woman as the Democratic nominee. He faces off against Gillum in November's general election.

The Republican Congressman is not likely to push for adult-use legalization in Florida's future, but he has stated his support for both medical marijuana legalization and a state's right to set policies free from federal intervention-positions that earned him a "B" on the most recent political scorecard published by NORML.
