Scott Morrison to be Australian PM as Malcolm Turnbull ousted

Scott Morrison to be Australian PM as Malcolm Turnbull ousted

"It was extraordinary", Mr Turnbull said.

He proved out of step with most Australians a year ago when he unsuccessfully campaigned against Australia legislating to allow gay marriage.

"I don't think there's much evidence to suggest that conclusion is not correct".

Mr Dutton's and Mr Turnbull's camps waged the most chaotic, frenetic and at times farcical leadership struggle that Australian politics has seen in years, closing down Parliament on Thursday and damaging the Liberal Party's credibility. He was the first Immigration Minister in the Abbott government, meaning he was the architect of the monstrous immigration policy that has seen children locked up, deaths, rampant self-harm, and serious mental health issues among vulnerable refugees.

"They have no climate policy, no energy policy and no economic policy and the paralysis is likely to continue".

Mr Abbott trashed the Government's NEG last week, before Mr Turnbull made a U-turn and entered the current crisis.

"I have just been provided with a request for a meeting of the Parliamentary Liberal Party. I want to assure all Australian that those normal wheels are turning, " he added. "It is not a secret".

Turnbull faced opposition from conservative members of his party over low poll numbers as the country approaches a general election in May 2019.

"We must now all unite and move forward together working hard for the Australian people".

But the former immigration minister said he would be interested if "down the track, if an opportunity presented itself".

Treasurer Scott Morrison will be Australia's new prime minister after winning a three-way battle for the leadership of the Liberal party on Friday.

Mr Di Natale said the Liberal Party was "tear (ing) themselves apart" and that the "vote solves nothing".

The Treasurer edged out Peter Dutton, 45 to 40 in a partyroom meeting in Canberra on Friday afternoon.

"In relation to the deputy's position, this was won in a overwhelming sense, in a majority, an absolute majority, by Josh Frydenberg".

On social issues, Morrison has stood to the right of the more moderate Turnbull, and opposed the legalization of same-sex marriage past year.

Beleaguered Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull demanded the signatures as proof that most of his government had lost faith in him.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is among the favorites and would be Australia's second female prime minister.

The son of a police officer, Mr Morrison's hardworking character and leadership potential were quickly noted by his colleagues.

The fresh outbreak of political instability was met with renewed public disgust towards the political class - already among the least trusted profession in the country despite an unprecedented era of prosperity.

Australian prime minister Malcolm Turnbull has been ousted, ending a week of political infighting that has paralysed the Australian government.

Treasurer Scott Morrison won the following leadership contest, defeating former Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton by 45 votes to 40.

With a year remaining on his contract he returned to Sydney in early 2000 to take up the job of state director of the NSW Liberal Party.
