Trump says that he knew about Cohen's payments "later on"

Trump says that he knew about Cohen's payments

While the full implications for the Republican president remain unclear, Cohen's admission - and the prospect of more dirt-spilling to come - puts Trump in legal jeopardy, further emboldening his opponents as the country heads towards close-fought midterm elections in November.

Cohen's voice cracked several times as he pleaded guilty to eight criminal charges in federal court in Manhattan, including tax evasion, bank fraud and campaign finance violations.

The lawyer of President Trump's former longtime lawyer and fixer, Michael Cohen, said after Cohen pleaded guilty to eight felonies Tuesday that Cohen has been able "to recognize the danger of this particular president" and that he "knows a lot more than we think he knows" to tell special counsel Robert Mueller.

The New York state attorney general, Barbara Underwood, sued the Donald J Trump charitable foundation, Donald Trump and three of his children in June for allegedly violating state charity laws.

By Wednesday morning, Trump's remarks were nowhere near as supportive.

"As long as there is a secondary or dual goal, the law says it's not a campaign expense", Jarrett said.

"These are very serious charges that reflect a pattern of lies and dishonesty", Khuzami said outside the courthouse following the proceedings.

Trump's attorneys, Rudy Giuliani and Jay Sekulow, did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the briefings.

Cohen admitted breaking campaign rules by paying Stormy Daniels $130,000 11 days before the presidential election, saying he did so at the direction of a "candidate for federal office" - Trump.

He went on to assert that Cohen's campaign rule violations were "not a crime", while pointing to a campaign reporting violation settled by Barack Obama for $375,000 after the 2008 election.

Mr Davis said his client "was talking about Donald Trump" and that he had "directed and co-ordinated" the payments.

"My message to the president: you better not talk about pardons for Michael Cohen or Paul Manafort tonight, or anytime in the future", Schumer wrote on Twitter Tuesday.

In May, a NY taxi operator and former Cohen business partner agreed to cooperate with prosecutors as part of a plea deal in a separate NY state criminal tax fraud case.

Earhardt also asked Trump if the press is the "enemy of the people". All it means is that the government was willing to allow him to plea at this stage.

Trump attacked Cohen, tweeting, "If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don't retain the services of Michael Cohen!". Was it unexpected that Michael Cohen wouldn't be cooperating with federal authorities at this point?

The 51-year-old said in federal court in NY that he made the payments in coordination with President Trump, who was not named, to influence the election.

It's not clear how the plea deal with Cohen might affect other entities that have been under scrutiny by federal prosecutors as part of the Cohen investigation, including AMI or Pecker.

Federal agents had seized documents and files from Cohen in April that stemmed from a referral from Mueller's office.

The FBI raided Cohen's home and office on a referral from Mueller.

"I'm not going to get into the back-and-forth details", Sanders said.
