Furyk hints Woods could get Ryder Cup call

Furyk hints Woods could get Ryder Cup call

"I made a bit of a run, looks like I'm going to come up a couple of shots short", said Woods after coming off the 18th.

"Honestly, I was just trying to get it past the hole so putting down", he said. "You could hear it, for sure".

Behind the three frontrunners, Spain's Jon Rahm and Stewart Cink finished tied for fourth on 11-under, while defending champion Justin Thomas faded to finish a shot further back with British Open victor Francesco Molinari, Thomas Pieters and halfway leader Gary Woodland.

Woods finally found fairways on the back nine, but endured heartache at 11 when his 28-foot birdie putt hung on the edge of the cup, the ball refusing to fall until he tapped it in for par.

His major finishes this year: 32nd at the Masters, cut in the U.S. Open, tied for sixth at the British, and, now, second at the PGA.

Koepka, in fact, birdied the first hole at Bellerive on Sunday.

The back-to-back US Open champion now has the same number of majors as Jordan Spieth and just one fewer than Rory McIlroy.

"He's been really a big help to our captains in both 2016 and 2017 (at the Presidents Cup) from a strategy perspective, from personnel, personalities, and also really serving on the golf course".

But with four holes to go at the PGA Championship on Sunday the Australian was tied for the lead with Brooks Koepka and eyeing what would have been an extremely emotional win in the week good friend Jarrod Lyle passed away from his near 20-year battle with cancer.

Yet a solid finish at The Open Championship last month and his sparkling form at the PGA Championship has seen Wood explode back up the rankings ladder and he sits at No.26 in the latest table. "He recognized who that guy was that day", Bjorn said.

With so many permutations still on the cards, Koepka stroke a 4m birdie dead centre on the 15th, then hit a laser four-iron to 2m on the 225m par-three 16th to take what would be the winning lead.

Koepka won his second major championship of the year, and Woods finished second for the ninth time in a major, but it was hard not to view the 14-time major champion in a positive light after he stirred the masses to the verge of hysteria.

Woods was playing for his 15th major championship - and his first since 2008.

Woods wants to be hitting some shots, too. I didn't drive it good all day. He did well to advance it, but had to save par from a bunker. Woods served as a vice captain during that triumph.

Woods and Koepka played nine holes of a practice round Wednesday, and the 14-time major champion knew what he was up against. "What he did at Shinnecock, just bombing it, and then he's doing the same thing here".

Koepka never imagined a year like this.

"This guy started out the year injured", Furyk said, referring to a wrist injury that kept Koepka out of the Masters.
