US President Donald Trump expressed his condolences to the family of, "a person I knew well - she worked for me on numerous occasions, she was terrific".

"Critics always talked about the gospel feeling in Aretha's voice so it was a very big deal when she finally made a proper gospel album like "Amazing Grace, '" Carpenter said. We were witnessing the greatest soul artist of all time".

In January, famed record executive Clive Davis announced at his annual pre-GRAMMY party in NYC that Franklin actually handpicked Hudson to play her. Here, The Los Angeles Times looks back at her life, her music and her impact.

Rhythm and blues singer Aretha Franklin performs at the inaugural gala for President Clinton in Washington on January 19, 1993.

John Stamos tweeted, "She was music". I adored her and worshipped her talent.

She influenced generations of female singers with unforgettable hits including "Respect" (1967), "Natural Woman" (1968) and "I Say a Little Prayer" (1968). Five years later - because a diva never forgets! - she sent a fax to the AP to clarify Warwick's error.

"Her music was deepened by her connection to the struggles and the triumphs of the African American experience", he said in a statement. Her father was famous in his own right, and when the family moved to Detroit while Aretha Franklin was a child, their house often hosted figures like Nat King Cole, Martin Luther King Jr, and Mahalia Jackson. Her June 1971 "homecoming" show "drove fans to near-hysteria", according to the theater. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005.

In her key scene, Franklin (as Mrs. Murphy) sings iconic soul classic "Think" to her husband Matt "Guitar' Murphy in the middle of their restaurant when Jake and Elwood try and recruit him to their band".

Franklin was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in 1987 - a year before the Beatles were inducted. She joined New Times' staff in 2011 and left the paper in 2014, but two years and two babies later, returned.
