Trump can not even commemorate Charlottesville correctly

Trump can not even commemorate Charlottesville correctly

"We must come together as a nation", he wrote on Twitter.

In a tweet over the weekend, Trump said he condemned "all types of racism and acts of violence".

Charlottesville rejected Unite the Right's request to stage the repeat rally, so the march has been relocated to Washington, DC, where police have promised a heavy presence that will separate the demonstrators from the likely much-larger counter-protester gathering.

Officials declared states of emergency for both the city of Charlottesville and the state of Virginia to help law enforcement mobilise state and local resources for security reasons.

Two days later, after a firestorm of criticism, the president said: "Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups".

Rally organizers encouraged supporters to bring a USA or Confederate flags, and cautioned not to react angrily to counter protesters.

The violence culminated with a man driving a vehicle into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heyer and injuring 19 people.

Scott, one of the nation's most prominent Black Republicans, was troubled by Trump's statements and met with president in September 2017. Peace to ALL Americans!' He said then that there were "good people on both sides", and later, "blame on both sides". "Ignore the hate, love your American family, and discuss with respect, if often disagreement, the ideas upon which we should move forward together".

Her father was slammed last year for saying that there was "hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides" in the wake of the riots, which left 32-year-old Heather Heyer dead.

In one of the most recent race-related flare-ups, a black former White House employee, Omarosa Manigault Newman, has written in an upcoming memoir that Trump was caught on mic uttering the N-word "multiple times" during the making of his hit reality TV show "The Apprentice" prior to his presidential run, and that there are tapes to prove it.

Veteran journalist Dan Rather on Sunday called out Donald Trump for "using false equivalence" in his tweet addressing the Charlottesville "Unite the Right" rally.

Jeanne Zaino, professor of political science at Iona College, said: "He has calculated that any straight out condemnation may turn his base another way so he is walking this line where he condemns racism on both sides - as if there were two sides to this".

Shows of affection from anti-nazi demonstrators a far cry from the murder and violence from the neo-nazis past year in Charlottesville. "Instead, he is planning a "white civil rights" event in Washington, D.C., on Sunday".

"It is clear that the lessons learned from last year's event was implemented into this year's incident action plan and again executed", Colonel Gary Settle, the Virginia State Police superintendent, said.
