Companies defy EU's ban to adopt USA sanctions on Iran

Companies defy EU's ban to adopt USA sanctions on Iran

Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho on Tuesday (Aug 7), on the same day the U.S. reimposed nuclear-related sanctions on the Islamic republic.

"Wherever you see Iranian activity, you see Qassem Soleimani".

Trump said Tuesday that anyone doing business with Iran will not be allowed to maintain business ties with the United States.

Iran's president Hassan Rouhani has threatened to shut down the strait in response to sanctions re-imposed on the Iranian regime this week by Trump, who in May withdrew from a 2015 agreement easing sanctions on Iran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear programs.

"But this is not the first time that the Iranian leadership is dealing with sanctions", Vaez said adding "I doubt that in the next two years we would see the collapse of the government or the regime in Tehran".

On Monday, Prime Minister Benyamin Netanyahu also commented on the American move against Iran, stating that the re-imposed sanctions were "an important moment for Israel".

North Korean foreign minister, Ri Yong Ho, visited Iran as the United States reintroduced sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

And Danish engineering firm Haldor Topsoe said it was cutting 200 jobs in the country as a result of the sanctions. "Nobody can do anything", Khamenei said, the website reported.

The sanctions imposed this month prohibit Iran from using USA dollars, the primary currency for global financial transactions and oil purchases, and restrict Iranian trade in metals, carpets and other goods.

The United States is closely monitoring Iranian naval activity to ensure no disruptions occur to global shipping, a top USA general said Wednesday, as tensions with Tehran intensify over renewed economic pressure from the Trump administration. They target US dollar financial transactions, Iran's automotive sector and the purchase of commercial planes and metals, including gold.

More broadly, Votel condemned Iran for its continued efforts to destabilise other countries in the region, including Syria, Iraq and Yemen.

The showdown over sanctions demonstrates once again the economic clout of the United States, severely restricting the ability of Germany or any other European country to follow a different policy.

Zarif welcomed Ri and a team of officials at the foreign ministry in Tehran, but no statement was made to reporters.

USA officials have said in recent weeks that they aim to pressure countries to stop buying oil from Iran in a bid to force Tehran to halt its nuclear and missile programs and involvement in regional conflicts in Syria and Iraq.

Twenty percent of the world's oil is transported through the Strait of Hormuz each day.

The general said he has come up with no explanation why those aggressive actions - the vast majority carried out by Iranian Revolutionary Guard swift boats - have ceased.

Indeed, in many cases the sanctions as they exist are directly harming European Union companies, and the Trump Administration has been very direct in threatening to punish those companies if they do business with Iran, despite European Union law making it clear they may legally do so.
