Academy Awards To Introduce New Category For "Outstanding Achievement In Popular Film"

Academy Awards To Introduce New Category For

In another attempt at appealing to viewers, the Academy also said that they voted to limit the Oscar telecast to 3 hours.

The most important change to come is that the Academy will introduce a new award category meant to honor "outstanding achievement in popular film".

Scott Feinberg reports that the Academy has chose to only feature select wins on the telecast to keep the show trimmed to a solid three hours. Some will be presented during commercial breaks at the Dolby Theatre, with the key moments being edited into the broadcast later. The Academy also plans to set an earlier air date for the Oscars in 2020 - February 9 - and will be making that broadcast more "globally accessible".

- A new category is being designed around achievement in popular film. Either way, expect this to shake up the Oscar race in future. None of the Best Picture winners over the last five years broke $100 million in the box office, according to Box Office Mojo. 91st Oscars telecast is now scheduled for Sunday, February 24, 2019. Read the full message to Academy members below.

Although Oscars does award commercially successful films, it tends to exclude genre movies such or superhero films like Star Wars or, more recently, Black Panther.

Ratings for the 90th Academy Awards fell to an all-time low of 26.5 million viewers, down 19 percent from the previous year and the first time the glitzy awards ceremony had fewer than 30 million viewers since 2008.

As of now, it's unclear if these changes will be in effect during this winter's upcoming Oscars, or the 2020 telecast.

What we do know, though, is that the Academy has just taken a major step in the direction of focusing more on blockbusters, which are often viewed as a kind of art form unto themselves. This decision will likely affect the timing of other awards, and the announcement of that year's Oscar nominees - no Hollywood agent is going to happily agree to cutting the time allotted for Oscar campaigns two weeks shorter.
