No-Smoking Rule For Federally-Subsidized Public Housing Goes Info Effect

No-Smoking Rule For Federally-Subsidized Public Housing Goes Info Effect

Smoking is no longer allowed in New York City public housing.

Starting Tuesday, the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development bars the use of cigarettes, cigars and pipes in any public housing unit and common areas, including hallways and on a porch.

HUD says about 228,000 public housing units under more than 600 local agencies were already smoke-free, and the new rule wipes out smoking in more than 940,000 other units.

HUD announced in November 2016 that all federally-owned public housing must be smokefree by July 30, 2018.

The policy also extends to all outdoor areas up to 25 feet from the public housing and administrative office buildings. "And they could overcome this, so I want to work with them to make this as painless as it can be in a hard situation for those that are addicted to smoking", Mayeaux said. He also shares his thoughts on the policy that does not include e-cigarettes.

HUD said the ban will help reduce damage and maintenance costs for public housing, as well cutting down on secondhand smoke. "They have more things to fix than telling somebody they can't smoke", Robinson said.

Smoking kills an estimated 480,000 people a year and is the lead cause for fire-related deaths in multifamily buildings, HUD said a release.

Residents are fuming at the new policies stating it's not fair they will be monitored in their homes.

Many senior citizens were around during the time when there were no bans on smoking, allowing consumers to smoke in places like restaurants and non-hospitality workplaces.
