Geraint Thomas Wins Tour de France Title

Geraint Thomas Wins Tour de France Title

It's just a dream.

"After a hard day yesterday I did not think it was possible", Froome said. "You can choose to let it get to you or you can choose to let it motivate you, and we let it motivate us". I felt strong in the time trial. Oh, and my wife.

'To be actually around winning it is, you have to pinch yourself. "Now, he's being repaid for all the years of hard work and sacrifice he has made for the team".

Team Sky began the race not only with Thomas and four-time champion Froome, but also 21-year-old Colombian Egan Bernal, who thwarted most of their rivals' attacks in the mountains, former world champion Michal Kwiatkowski and former Liege-Bastogne-Liege victor Wout Poels.

For years he had arrived in Paris as just another domestique in Sky's train, having served Froome or Bradley Wiggins, and there was no doubt he had earned his time to wear yellow. Thomas's contract with Sky finishes at the end of the year and the British outfit could find themselves with two grand tour leaders if the new champion-elect extends his contract.

Watch how the penultimate stage at the Tour de France unfolded in the highlights video above.

Dumoulin accused the stage victor of drafting behind a motorbike. "Thomas was the absolute strongest over the three weeks, and he showed that every day". It could have been awkward with a bit of tension in the team, but there wasn't any at all. On stage 16 he capped a daring attack by overtaking Adam Yates, who had crashed, on his way to a second stage win on the downhill finish at Bagneres-de-Luchon.

Thomas will take a lead of 1 minute, 51 seconds into Sunday's final stage to Paris, which is traditionally a procession.

Thomas may have known he had a buffer to play with, but he was not taking it easy as he was fastest through the first and second splits before grinding up the Col de Pinodieta and dropping back.

"I got into cycling because of this race".

He is also the first Dutchman in 30 years to finish second at the Tour.

In Victoria, he raced in the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, winning a points race bronze medal, while he is certainly "au fait" with Sydney's cycling milieu. In February, 2005, Thomas was training in Sydney with the Great Britain track squad and had to undergo an operation to remove his spleen that had been ruptured by a piece of metal flinging up from the ground, into his wheel and then into him.

Described by his coaches as a dedicated professional with a healthy and a balanced lifestyle, Thomas had already showed huge skills on the road from winning the Paris-Roubaix junior race in 2004.

The Tour de France is the world's biggest and most iconic cycling race.

"It's just overwhelming. It's just incredible. I can't believe it", said Thomas on ITV4.

For Thomas' fans in Wales, the feat is just as monumental.

"All the interest of Cardiff is nuts. I'm really looking forward to that".
