'Blood moon' to appear for 21st century's longest lunar eclipse on Friday

'Blood moon' to appear for 21st century's longest lunar eclipse on Friday

The areas of our planet from which this can be experienced are very limited, because the total lunar eclipse must be ongoing at the time of moonset/sunrise.

One of the longest total lunar eclipses of the centuries will light up the skies around the world on Friday night into the wee hours of Saturday morning.

Although it is expected to last 103 minutes, those in the United Kingdom and Ireland will not be able to see the start of the lunar eclipse as the moon will still be below the horizon. The next lunar eclipse of such a length is due in 2123.

People in Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Africa and Asia will have the best view, while the final stages of the eclipse after sunset will be visible in parts of South America.

"Belfast looks like the best place to see it tonight, but you never know". According to him, the moon orbits around Earth, while Earth orbits around the sun.

For one, Mars will be at opposition, when Earth lies directly between it and the sun (four days later, Mars will be the closest to Earth since 2003). The moon gives off no light and is only visible because it reflects the light of the sun. The Moon will be gradually covered by the Earth's shadow and the totality phase will begin at 1h 00m IST on July 28.

While there are innumerable misnomers and superstitions about the moon and its dark side, including the eclipse's potential impact on the body and mind, none of them have any scientific corroboration till date.

What is Total Lunar Eclipse?

After Friday's climax it will continue to glow for several days through the weekend as partial eclipses continue to colour the moon as it passes partially into the Earth's shadow.

The term "blood moon" may be a rather sinister description for a total eclipse of the moon, but that doesn't take away from the special event which will unfold in the skies on July 27.

A Super Blue Blood Moon rises behind the Camlica Mosque on January 31, 2018 in Istanbul, Turkey. This is why it's called Blood Moon. So it's anyone's guess just how red this eclipse will be. A partial lunar eclipse happens when part of the Moon enters Earth's shadow.

Such events only happened around every 17 years - and some brought us closer than others.

Where can I watch Chandra Grahan or Lunar Eclipse Online/ Live Stream?

In India, an eclipse or grahan is looked at in awe and wonder. The whole celestial event is to get over at 3.49 am. One should avoid alcohol, non-vegetarian foods, high protein foods etc.

However many are now debunking this myth and encouraging people to drink and eat so that people avoid dehydration, headaches, acidity, fatigue etc.

What other events coincide with Total Lunar Eclipse?

The best time to get out and see the moon slowly drifting into darkness is about 2.24am, when the moon will be partially eclipsed - a dark spot slowly growing across its surface as the night progresses.

"Enthusiasts can witness the phenomenon with the naked eye and without any filter", Bharat Kumar of the Breakthrough Science Society (BSS) in Bengaluru said.
