Newswatch: Italian Molinari wins British Open

Newswatch: Italian Molinari wins British Open

Jordan Spieth will take a share of the lead into the final round of the 147th British Open as he looks to become the first back-to-back victor for a decade.

Jordan Spieth and Xander Schauffele, the last pairing in the final round of the British Open, have teed off at Carnoustie where quite a stiff wind is blowing. "If I can just make the birdies and try to limit the damage tomorrow it will be interesting".

He reached the turn in 34 strokes and with Spieth and Schauffele imploding a few holes back Woods was suddenly clear at the top of the leaderboard on seven-under.

"Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah", said Woods, who finished the tournament finished tied for sixth, three shots behind playing partner Molinari.

Spieth was at 9-under 204.

Rory McIlroy was also heading in the wrong direction, the four-time major victor dropping shots on the second and fifth to join Fleetwood on three under.

Francesco Molinari has won the British Open capping a thrilling Sunday that saw Tiger Woods get himself in the hunt.

Another dropped shot followed at the next hole and Woods was unable to recover.

The last of his 14 majors came at the U.S. Open in 2008.

This took him to within one shot of the lead. "I'm not making excuses for myself by any means because all I had to do is shoot even par today, and I could certainly do that out here".

The Golf Channel's Justin Ray points out the length of time between sub-70 rounds in the Open for Tiger Woods.

"The way Francesco played today was handsome", said Woods, a 14-time major victor, of the new champion.

However, Tommy Fleetwood's chances of becoming the first English victor since Nick Faldo in 1992 looked to have gone after he pulled his third shot on the sixth out of bounds, the resulting double bogey leaving him six off the pace.

Molinari clinched it with a driver that skirted the edge of a pot bunker, leaving him a lob wedge from 112 yards to 5 feet.

Molinari was ranked No. 15 in the world before hoisting the Claret Jug and moved up to No. 6. McIlroy soon joined them after a 59-foot eagle putt at the par-5 14th, as did Schauffele with a birdie at the 10th.

On Sunday afternoon, needing a shot to set a clubhouse target, he was cursing it again.

Zach Johnson and Kevin Kisner shared the overnight lead at 6-under par. All day long they had heard the cheers rolling across the links of Carnoustie. He also ended as runner-up in the other two tournaments.

"I've always wanted to battle it out with Tiger in a major - who hasn't?" Then he missed a 4-footer for par at No. 3.

Woods, playing at his first British Open since 2015, rolled back the clocks on Saturday with a sizzling 66 - his best round at an Open since winning at a similarly parched Hoylake in 2006.

The third round began with little more than a mild breeze, and several players were taking advantage.

Justin Rose, who made a birdie on the 18th hole Friday to make the cut, was 2 under through 8 holes. Former champion Henrik Stenson hit into a dry burn on the fourth hole. American Kevin Chappell made the sole birdie and there were 25 bogeys and eight double bogeys or worse.

He compiled 13 straight pars before edging ahead with a birdie on the 14th and then sealing victory with another birdie at the last. He dropped to world number 1,199 and looked on as a generation of players that grew up idolising him won the Majors that he still craved.

"I had a great opportunity", he said after shooting 71 to finish equal sixth, three strokes behind victor Francesco Molinari.
