What the Tech? Amazon Prime Day problems

As with all sale events in India, there was a competing sale to Prime Day. It's a challenge that not even Amazon could escape this Prime Day. Target. The Minneapolis-based retailer says its one-day sales event, which it billed as a "no membership required" extravaganza, led to its highest single day of sales and traffic, with deals on small appliances, beauty and personal care products, baby gear and electronics among the fastest-selling.

Starting the sale earlier might have helped Amazon buoy its sales growth from last year's Prime Day, but making the all-important Prime members angry could still have consequences.

The initial problems with site crashes started shortly after the event launched at 3 p.m. EDT on July 16 and mostly ended about two hours later, although there were spotty problems up to about 8:15 p.m. on Amazon's mobile app.

Many Prime Day deals are time-limited and stock restricted.

"If you were planning to find Prime deals to lower the cost of back-to-school (purchases), you're nearly certainly going back to your traditional venue of choice", he said.

AMZN promised "an epic day (and a half) of our best deals", but not all customers were able to take advantage of the sale, at least for the first few hours.

July 17 was the biggest sales day for smart home devices in Amazon history, with over a million devices sold. And like many other online shoppers, I immediately ran into technical glitches. About an hour later, website issues, for the most part, subsided although some still reported issues with the search functions for several more hours.

At Whole Foods, the best-selling Prime Day deal was organic strawberries. And all the while the clock was counting down on those timed Lightning Deals.

"Some customers are having difficulty shopping, and we're working to resolve this issue quickly", Amazon said in a statement posted on Twitter at 4:59 p.m.

Roughly 70 percent of US shoppers had said in retail industry surveys that they planned to visit Amazon.com during Prime Day, which should set the stage for a blowout quarterly earnings report from Amazon next week as it benefits from the growth in its Amazon Web Services cloud computing business, according to Ives, who rates Amazon's stock as "highly attractive". Amazon's cloud infrastructure business quietly accounts for almost three-quarters of Amazon's operating income.

Prime numbers, indeed: Amazon Prime Day sales are expected to top $3.4 billion this year, a 44 percent increase from the $2.4 billion haul last year as the e-commerce giant expanded both the duration of the shopping holiday and the number of deals offered, according to a recent report from Coresight Research. By its reckoning, Prime Day sparked far more desktop display ad impressions than it did previous year, including 566.3 million non-house ads, and 1.67 billion house ad impressions.

As of this writing, Brad Moon did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
