Kevin Anderson vs John Isner, Wimbledon 2018 semi-final

Kevin Anderson vs John Isner, Wimbledon 2018 semi-final

The South African needed six hours and 36 minutes to see off Isner 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 26-24 in a truly epic encounter featuring 102 aces and 96 service games.

But Isner was playing his first Grand Slam semifinal while the South African was in his second after making the US Open final.

Prior to facing the veteran American, Anderson had defeated the heavy favorite and defending champion Roger Federer. Nadal is the most recent major victor, having taken home his 11th title at the French Open last month.

For tournaments without a final set tiebreaker, put John Isner on Centre Court at your own peril.

"It's hard to pick the words".

"Whenever I go out there, I just try to win my match".

"Nothing to complain. I think I played a great match".

"It's very special. It really could have gone either way". It was quite clear that there was very little to separate us, just small details.

But he found himself in even more unfamiliar territory with an inspired Anderson's relentless, thudding serve eventually overpowering the 20-time grand slam victor.

"I had my chances so it's disappointing, but he was consistent and solid".

"You live for these matches". Djokovic is playing at such a high level and is back at the superstar form that won him 12 Grand Slam titles.

Saturday's matchup is a rematch of the 2016 Wimbledon final, when Williams beat Kerber.

"He had a day off which means a lot".

"I don't know what to say right now. That's an incredible achievement".

In a match, which was stopped on Friday night, Djokovic leading two sets to one, due to the 23h00 time curfew after the Anderson v John Isner semi-final took over six hour to complete.

Play in their 52nd career meeting resumed under the roof on Saturday despite bright blue skies and temperatures pushing 30 degrees.

"I think after each win throughout these 10 days, I've had a Kit Kat. I really hope we can look at this, because at the end you don´t feel great", said Anderson who has been on court for over 21 hours at these championships.

David Adair: When the Anderson v Isner match went past 25 games fifth set - you thought history and experience in marathon's made Isner favourite for the first time in the match.

Quotable: "We always played in important stages, important places", Nadal said of facing Djokovic.

In Friday's opening set, Djokovic's serve proved crucial after not faced any break points and earning the crucial break on Nadal's serve in the seventh game with a forehand victor to claim the set 6-4. Fortunately, he was at the end of the court farthest from the Royal Box, where the pair of visiting Duchesses, Kate and the newly married Meghan, sat in the front row.
