Pakistan mourns after Mastung carnage kills 128

Nawabzada Siraj Raisani, Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) candidate for a Provincial Assembly seat was among those who lost their lives in the deadly bomb blast. Raisani and at least 128 others were killed in the attack, while over 200 were injured.

At least 85 people, including Raisani, were killed and more than 150 injured in a deadly blast, Dawn newspaper quoted Balochistan's caretaker health minister Faiz Kakar as saying.

Local officials say the attacker detonated a bomb inside a crowded compound where the campaign rally was being held.

Sharif's return is set to increase political tensions as his Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz seeks to fend off a challenge from the party of cricketerturned- politician Imran Khan at the polls.

Police swept through Lahore arresting Mr Sharif's supporters, who turned out to greet them at the airport.

"Stop killing people, stop shedding blood" read one banner, while another read, "Terrorism and terrorist should be curbed with iron hands".

He has accused Pakistan's powerful security establishment of conspiring against him ahead of the elections.

The military intensified operations against militants in the tribal areas along the border with Afghanistan in the wake of that attack, and security has improved dramatically.

On July 13, the convoy of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) candidate from NA-35 Bannu came under attack.

The bombing was the most deadly attack in Pakistan in over three years and is the third incident of election-related violence this week.

"The Pakistani authorities have a duty to protect the rights of all Pakistanis during this election period - their physical security and their ability to express their political views freely, regardless of which party they belong to", said Omar Waraich, deputy South Asia director at Amnesty International.

Friday's bombings underscored the security threat.

In a separate statement condemning recent terrorist attacks in Pakistan targeting political rallies and candidates, Secretary-General António Guterres also extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and to the country's Government and people.
