Why It's Always a Bad Idea to Underestimate Serena Williams

Why It's Always a Bad Idea to Underestimate Serena Williams

"It's insane. I don't even know how to feel because I literally didn't think I'd do this well in my fourth tournament back in 16 months", said the American, who won the 2017 Australian Open while in the early stages of her pregnancy.

All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, London, Britain - July 12, 2018.

What, then, should we call Serena Williams, who will match Court's record if she beats Angelique Kerber in today's Wimbledon final?

Margaret Court - who leads the all-time standings with 24 major singles titles - used to be known as "The Arm" because of her unusual physical dimensions: her racket arm was said to be three inches longer than that of a normal woman of her height. I don't think Serena is the greatest mover on the court, and that is how Camila Giorgi took her to the limit.

"'She's always going out there to win the matches, it doesn't matter against who she is playing", Kerber stated on Serena.

Williams' pregnancy was not without complications, as she told the BBC this week: "It's no secret I had a super tough delivery".

In Saturday's final, Williams, 36, will compete against another German player, No. 11 seed Angelique Kerber, herself a two-time Grand Slam champion. Kerber lost their last matchup two years ago in the final and will want revenge.

In addition to the issues relating to her health, Williams has also had to deal with being away from her daughter at such a precious moment in her child's development. Ostapenko: Winners (30), Unforced Errors (36); Kerber: Winners (10), Unforced Errors (7). After Kerber had her serve broken in the second set, Ostapenko powered back to take another game, but Kerber was able to complete the sweep when Ostapenko fired two serves back into the net and returned the final volley outside the lines on match point. She won the grass-court tournament the last two times she played it, in 2015 and 2016, before missing it past year while pregnant. Williams has discussed breastfeeding and the dilemmas surrounding when to give it up; crying when she missed her daughter's first steps while training; and not wanting Alexis Olympia to become a tennis player because she fears she would be unfavourably compared with her.

"I don't have anything to lose and I feel I can play so free. I had a really tough delivery and I had to have multiple surgeries and almost didn't make it when I gave birth", the champion said. Until the start of this tournament, that was the last match Williams played at Wimbledon.

Not to be denied, Williams broke straight back to love to seal victory and celebrating with her customary twirl after booking her place in a 30th grand slam singles final.

An avid tennis fan, Kate has attended nearly every year since becoming a royal, is patron of The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, and famously had a tennis court built at her Amner Hall home. But if any player tips the scales in that category, it's Williams, who is enjoying her matches as much as ever.

There were moments when watching Goerges made it easy to wonder how it could be possible she never had been past a major's fourth round until now.

"I can't say it's the one I'm most proud of".

However she has put in just a handful of public appearances since giving birth to Prince Louis in April and has not been seen since she watched her husband play at the polo last month.
