Eight boys brought safely out of flooded Thai caves in two days

Eight boys brought safely out of flooded Thai caves in two days

The boys became trapped in the cave on 23 June after heavy rains caused flooding, but were found alive last week by divers.

Four members of the youth soccer team trapped for more than two weeks in a flooded cave in Thailand were freed Monday, bringing the total number of boys rescued to eight.

The head of the rescue mission, Narongsak Osottanakorn, said last week they would bring the fittest people in the group out first.

Rescue mission chief Narongsak Osotthanakorn on Monday said the operation on the second day started at 11am.

The four people rescued Sunday are now receiving medical treatment at Prachanukroh hospital in Chiang Rai, around 35 miles away, where the eighth floor has been reserved for the soccer team, their coach and their families - who have maintained a patient vigil by the entrance to the cave while the boys have been underground. Authorities have said extracting the entire team from the cave could take up to four days, but Sunday's success raised hopes that it could be done faster.

The four who were rescued previously were taken to a hospital in Chiang Rai for evaluation.

Following the successful evacuation on Sunday, rescue personnel assessed their performance and adjusted the plan for Monday, resulting in "a smooth, coordinated operation", deputy commander of the Third Army Maj Gen Chalongchai Chaiyakham told reporters.

Thai authorities said the parents of the four boys rescued Sunday are still being kept from physical contact with them due to fear of infections.

Rescuers are racing to beat the next downpour, which could further complicate efforts to remove the boys, aged 11 to 16, and their 25-year-old coach.

Nine members of the "Wild Boars" team are still inside the Tham Luang cave after foreign and Thai divers guided four boys out safely late on Sunday.

Underscoring the danger in the fast-moving waters, a former Thai navy SEAL died on Friday while moving the canisters, reportedly because of lack of oxygen.

"Imagine marathon runners. It's like when they reach the finish line exhausted", said the source.

A device by Elon Musk's SpaceX and The Boring Company, created to help rescue the remaining members of a soccer team trapped in a flooded cave in Chiang Rai, Thailand, is being tested in a swimming pool in Los Angeles, California, in this still image taken from an undated video obtained from social media. Health officials say the rescued boys will be hospitalized for at least seven days, but they have been cleared to eat normal food.

And he has been true to his word, sending some of his top engineers to Thailand to help with the rescue, saying: "There are probably many complexities that are hard to appreciate without being there in person".

Kittichok Kankeaw, a teammate of Nattawut Takamsai, one of the trapped boys, said he would try to assist his friend to catch up at school.

Relatives said the boys had been inside the labyrinthine complex during the dry season.

Thailand's Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda said the divers who took part in Sunday's rescue were also conducting the current operation.

It comes a day after four of the boys were brought to the surface.
