Why Tony Parker 'had to move on' from Spurs

"It's hard to put into words how important Tony Parker has been to the Spurs franchise over the past two decades", he said.

Parker, now a member of the Charlotte Hornets, said he always wanted to play Leonard and things were spun in a way not intended, as Parker told Marc Spears of ESPN.

Leonard is eligible to sign a five-year $219m supermax contract extension in San Antonio this summer and is still said to have a good relationship with coach Popovich.

Parker was one of the cornerstones of the Spurs' franchise, joining guard Manu Ginobili and forward Tim Duncan to win four National Basketball Association titles since 2003.

Parker was a four-time champion, Finals MVP and six-time All-Star with the Spurs. We are grateful to Tony for 17 years of truly awesome memories.

Tony Parker doesn't have an issue with Kawhi Leonard. And per Wojnarowski's report, that was that with Leonard and the Spurs.

Parker is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Hornets and informed the Spurs of his decision, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski (via Twitter). Parker will have a piece of his time in San Antonio with him as he sets up camp in Charlotte.

And tensions were strained further when Parker made comments to the media suggesting an injury he had sustained previously was "100 times worse" than Leonard's current plight. Parker willingly gave up his starting role to youngster Dejounte Murray last season.

After returning from a quad injury, he played 55 games last season, but averaged career-low numbers with 7.7 points and 3.5 assists per game.

Leonard's camp has tried to paint one of the most player-friendly franchises in the National Basketball Association - one that from rehab through player rest has always put player health first - as just the opposite of that, as controlling and pushy.
