Wasted chances cost Brazil at the World Cup

Wasted chances cost Brazil at the World Cup

Following Brazil's 1-2 defeat to Belgium in Kazan, numerous Brazilian players spoke to the media about going out of the World Cup at the quarter final stage.

And De Bruyne feels Brazil's inability to properly adapt to Belgium's tactics ultimately cost them.

Brazil dominated the opening stages, with Thiago Silva hitting the post, but went behind when midfielder Fernandinho put the ball into his own net from a corner in the 13th minute.

Belgium has beaten Brazil 2-1 to reach the semifinals of the World Cup for just the second time.

But as Belgian legs exhausted, Brazil spurned several great chances to push the match into extra-time, Augusto drilling inches wide and Coutinho skewing his effort off target from Neymar's pass.

That proved to be Brazil's last chance, and Belgium will march on to their first World Cup semi-final since 1986, where they will face France.

Up next for Roberto Martinez's side will be a highly anticipated semifinal matchup with their southern neighbors, France, the last remaining pre-tournament favorite still breathing.

There is guaranteed to be a fourth straight European team winning the World Cup on July 15 in Moscow. It's more competitive, as we're seeing at this World Cup, and we have to do our bit.

Belgium held on even after Philippe Coutinho's cross was headed in by Augusto, who managed to evade Kompany and Jan Vertonghen three minutes after replacing Paulinho.

Manager Martinez chose to start with Marouane
Fellaini and Nacer Chadli, the midfielders who transformed the game as substitutes in the last-16 fightback against Japan.

The 25-year-old ripped Brazil's back four to shreds in the first half, linking up play splendidly and running from deep whilst also acting as a target man out wide. "But it is a dream match for our players - they were born to play in a match like this".

"I think we switched things up tactically", Man of the Match De Bruyne told reporters at the Kazan Arena. Five of Europe's biggest clubs have both Brazil and Belgium internationals on the books, prompting us to take a close look at the match-ups within the match, one of the biggest in Belgian footballing history. He can, therefore, expect to come up against not only Hazard but also Thibaut Courtois who will nearly certainly man the posts for Belgium.

Brazil saw two penalty claims in quick succession waved away by Serbian referee Milorad Mazic after Neymar tumbled following contact with Fellaini and Gabriel went to ground after a challenge from Vincent Kompany.

Two Number 10s, two leaders - one officially captain, one the star player; today, their stories couldn't have been more different.
