Sung Hyun Park survives heat, field, storm to win KPMG Women’s PGA

Sung Hyun Park survives heat, field, storm to win KPMG Women’s PGA

Park put herself in a bad position by almost hitting her ball in the water next to the green.

On the par-five seventh, a shot that appeared water-bound ended up in a spectator's bag.

Ryu finished with birdies on three of the final five holes, including a hard par-3 No. 17 that has water on three sides of a wide and contoured green along with some deep bunkers. After settling for a double bogey, she was tied with Park and Nataoka for the lead.

After Hataoka was eliminated in the first playoff hole, Park beat Ryu with a birdie to take home about 610 million won in prize money.

Park, who shot a bogey-free 69 in the final round to force the playoff, said her dramatic day felt "like a dream".

Park had a historic rookie year in 2017.

Park had failed to make the cut at five of the 12 events she'd played this season, looking a shadow of her former self heading to the Kemper Lakes Golf Club in IL this week. Despite a 75 in round two, Korda was still able to climb the leaderboard on Sunday with a 68 for her fifth top 10 of the year.

And she continued to head in the wrong direction as the tournament wrapped up at the Kemper Lakes Golf Club early Monday (NZT), with the 21-year-old Kiwi posting a four-over 76 to finish on one over, in a tie for 31st.

Despite her successful debut last season, Park has had an inconsistent second season on the Tour. She fired a first round in the 60s in 10 of her 12 starts.

July 1, 2018; Kildeer, IL, USA; Sung Hyun Park poses with the trophy after winning the KPMG Women's PGA Championship golf tournament at Kemper Lakes Golf Club. While she most likely was going to make the team, there was doubt because Hye Jin Choi was one spot behind her in the world rankings and In Kyung Kim was just two spots behind.

Lydia Ko, of New Zealand, hits on the ninth hole during the second round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship golf tournament at Kemper Lakes Golf Club in Kildeer, Ill., Friday, June 29, 2018.

But when the day finally ended after a two-hole playoff and a brief storm delay, Sung Hyun Park was the victor.

Ryu took a three-shot lead on Park with a birdie at the 11th but gave back a shot two holes later.

It is truly and global leaderboard as the top five players represent four countries, Canada, USA, South Korea and England.

Angel Yin made seven birdies on Sunday and shot just 1-under and tied for fourth, her best finish in a major championship. I did 100 percent effort every shot, every putt.

After clinching her second career LPGA major title, South Korean star Park Sung-hyun "couldn't help" herself, as the usually stoic golfer displayed a rare outpouring of emotion.
