'Jordan, Open the Border': Syrians Chant as Thousands Stuck at Jordanian Border

It has supplied 300 tents and about 60 tons of food, clothing, humanitarian aid and medicine to thousands of internally displaced Syrians who fled heavy bombardment by Syrian government forces.

Warfare in the southwest could risk a further escalation because of its proximity to Israel.

A video released by Israel's military shows soldiers loading aid into trucks on the Israeli-controlled side and the cargo being then carried into vehicles by unidentified people on the Syrian side of the border.

The number of people who have fled Syria's southwestern city of Daraa to the border areas near Jordan and Israel due to fierce Assad regime attacks now stands at some 150,000, Syria's White Helmets civil-defense agency said Friday.

Discussions on Sunday were hard, said diplomatic sources familiar with the talks.

Southwest Syria is a "de-escalation zone" of reduced warfare and bombardment agreed by Russia, Jordan and the United States previous year.




Shortly after the collapse of negotiations over southern Syria, airstrikes intensified on rebel-held parts of Daraa province that borders Jordan.

But Russian negotiators had still not arrived several hours after another meeting was due to begin on Saturday, Jabawi said.

Jordan has been facilitating talks between rebel factions and Moscow over a deal that would end the violence in return for the return state rule to Deraa province.

State media said that government forces seized al-Harak and Rakham towns, and that insurgents in four other towns agreed to surrender their arms and make "reconciliation" deals.

Jabawi told The Associated Press that Russian Federation, a strong ally of President Bashar Assad's government, wants the rebels to hand over their weapons followed by a return of government forces to rebel-held areas.

Russian and rebel negotiators meet in Busra a-Sham on Sunday.

Most fronts were quiet Sunday with the exception of areas near Tafas in Daraa's northwest hit by regime air strikes, the Observatory said.

Almost 100 civilians have been killed since the assault began on June 19 with airstrikes, rocket fire and crude barrel bombs.
