Belgium stuns Japan in added time

Belgium stuns Japan in added time

Belgium had its status as a World Cup title contender severely tested on Monday, as it came back from two goals down to beat Japan and advance to a quarterfinal meeting with Brazil.

"I'm a neutral figure", Martinez said last week.

Belgium have avoided another World Cup shock after coming from behind to beat Japan 3-2 in a thrilling last-16 clash.

Belgium very almost equalised straight away. "In the World Cup you want to be flawless but it's about getting through, it's about winning".

Japan took the lead when they won possession deep in their own half.

Genki Haraguchi kept his composure to pick out the bottom corner on 48 minutes, after Vertonghen had failed to cut out a through-ball from Japan captain Makoto Hasebe.

It was the whole Belgium team who were facing humiliation seven minutes into the second half as Japan opened up a surprising lead through two high-quality goals.

Marouane Fellaini equalized for Belgium just five minutes later, rising above the Japanse defense to head in a fine ball from Eden Hazard.

Belgium finally found their first right before the 70-minute mark when Vertonghen headed a poor clearance from the Japanese defence that looped over goalkeeper Eiji Kawashima and somehow found the back of the net.

Belgium's Nacer Chadli scores their third goal.

In stoppage time, Keisuke Honda's 30-metre free-kick was parried away by Courtois.

Belgium is expected to recall all the 8 players that were rested against England.

De Bruyne advanced the ball with a handsome push, making a flawless lead pass to Jan Vertonghen with room to run.
