Beating England not priority, says Belgium's Martinez

Beating England not priority, says Belgium's Martinez

Southgate also insisted that he is determined to win tomorrow night's match against Belgium, even though it has been claimed England might have a better route to the semi-finals by finishing as group runners-up.

England manager Gareth Southgate did not confirm or deny any team news at his press conference but was full of praise for Kane.

But the path to the quarterfinal could see a match against Germany or Brazil for the victor - a question which will be determined before England and Belgium clash in Kaliningrad.

"It's different. If we'd been facing each other to qualify for the World Cup knock-out phase it would have been a lot more emotional", the Spaniard said.

But the England manager stressed that he is focused on making his side what Germany have been - a top team. "We play against them near enough every week".

"It's a game that we can celebrate and enjoy".

"I don't think he will be training on Wednesday, and I think we will make a final assessment tonight in order for him to be involved or not".

A draw would leave both sides still with the same amount of goals scored and goals conceded and obviously no way of deciding who tops the group on their head-to-head record. England are ahead because of the fair-play rules, with only two bookings compared to Belgium's three, and Southgate joked that "if I go and headbutt Roberto [Martínez] in the last five minutes" the English public would know he was being disingenuous about wanting to win the group.

Among the Premier League stars on the national team rosters for this match are four of last season's top six goal scorers - England captainHarry Kane (Tottenham, second with 30 goals) and compatriots Jamie Vardy (Leicester City, fourth with 20 goals), and Raheem Sterling(Manchester City, fifth with 18 goals), and Belgium's Romelu Lukaku (Manchester United, sixth with 16 goals).

"We have no idea who, when or where we will play", he said. I go back to the fact we're trying to develop a winning mentality and I can't imagine a situation where I talk to the players about anything else.

Harry Kane's involvement is one of the tricky decisions facing Southgate.
