FIFA WC 2018: Demystifying the Mexican earthquake

FIFA WC 2018: Demystifying the Mexican earthquake

Yesterday, Mexico created the sensation during its first game the 2018 World Cup in Russian Federation by defeating Germany, the reigning world champion 1 - 0.

Hirving Lozano struck the only goal of the Group F clash, but Mexico wasted numerous chances on the break to record an even larger margin of victory.

After a first half when Mexico surprised Germany by pressuring them across the field, in the second half the Mexican squad was more careful, staying mostly in defence and waiting for counterattacks.

Fans celebrate Mexico's win against Germany as they watched it on an outdoor screen in Mexico City's Zocalo on June 17.

This was the first time Germany have lost an opening game at a World Cup finals since going down 2-1 to Algeria when Spain hosted the 1982 tournament.

It could turn out to be a damaging defeat too. Mexico will face South Korea in its next game on Saturday in Rostov-on-Dov, Russia.

It's a situation we're not used to at all.

"In the first half we played very badly".

"We are Germany and we want to win every game, that's clear".

The 2014 World Cup winners were heavily criticised following the defeat, with ex-players slamming their performance, while numerous squad members admitted that they had not been good enough. "Our team has experience of dealing with losses, the next match will be decisive and we have to win it".

"It's pretty simple. We played like we did against Saudi Arabia, but against a better opponent", Hummels said to ZDF. The 22-year-old scored in the 35th minute with a low shot past Manuel Neuer.

Attention now turns to England as they prepare for their opening World Cup fixture against Tunisia on Monday.

Overjoyed Mexicans jumping after Sunday's upset shook the ground so hard that natural disaster detectors were set off in Mexico City, Reuters reported.

FIFA has opened an investigation for the latest incident of Mexico fans using the chant, despite FIFA on multiple occasions fining the Mexican federation (FMF), which has launched educational campaigns to try to stop its use.

"One thing I will not be doing is think about the round of 16".

"It will not happen to us", he said when asked whether Germany would fall in the group stage. We must show what made us strong.
