Armed bystander shoots, kills suspected carjacker at Walmart

Armed bystander shoots, kills suspected carjacker at Walmart

Two people have been wounded and one killed in a shootout outside a Walmart in Washington state, after an armed gunman attempted -but failed- to hijack a vehicle, whose driver also happened to be armed.

As Day tried to take a second vehicle a "bystander here in the parking lot shot the suspect", Wohl said. Another is a 16-year-old girl who, thankfully, wasn't as severely injured.

The unidentified man shot and killed the suspect, 44-year-old Tim Day, after he embarked on a violent spree that left three people injured - including a 48-year-old man who was shot twice when he refused to give up his auto, according to Q13 Fox.

Before attempting the carjackings, Tumwater Police said the suspect went into the Walmart and fired at a display case.

When the suspect got outside, he tried to steal a auto, but the man who was inside resisted and was shot.

According to a police release, two armed civilians initially approached the suspect. Seconds later and after multiple shots were fired, the would-be hijacker lay dead, while the driver suffered serious injuries and was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

Witnesses told KOMO that a total of three bystanders pulled guns on the suspect and at least one of them fired.

"Then the suspect tried to hijack a second auto".

The gunman was identified Monday as Tim O. Day, 44, of McCleary, Grays Harbor County, according to the Thurston County Coroner's Office.

According to a police spokesperson, the call began as a DUI suspect call.

"Then somebody yelled 'run, run!' and everyone took off", Ms Bailey said.

As police sped to the scene, they received a second call about a carjacking with shots fired. The investigation is continuing, she said. "This (suspect) could have taken out more people, wounded or killed", said witness Brian Adams.

Shortly after that, the man who is suspected of being the carjacker from earlier in the day began allegedly shooting at the Walmart.

Robert Berwick, another witness, added: "I heard two bangs. I looked down the aisle and saw a person running". Wallner said as she ran out of the store she heard more shots.

Police say nobody inside the store was injured by the gunfire, which caused scores of panicked customers to flee through emergency exits.

She said about that time the neighboring Costco store started evacuating its customers.
