Montreal to co-host 2026 World Cup

Montreal to co-host 2026 World Cup

As part of the bid, which was decided on by more than 200 member nations and announced at the annual FIFA Congress in Moscow on Wednesday, the USA will host 60 games while Canada and Mexico will each host 10. "Football today is the only victor".

The U.S. previously hosted in 1994 and the potential for a highly lucrative tournament, plus the existing stadiums and infrastructure, likely played a major role in swaying voters.

Not to mention the 2026 World Cup will coincide with the 250-year anniversary of the U.S.' independence.

For Morocco, there was only disappointment after previously unsuccessful bids in 1994 - when the North African nation also lost to the U.S. - in 1998, 2006 and 2010. The projects that we have presented in the Bid Book will be realised.

"We are grateful for the chance to bring to life FIFA's new vision for the future of football", said Decio de Maria, President of Mexico Football Federation and Co‐Chair of the United Bid. The final vote ended with 134 to the United States and 65 for Morocco.

Morocco, on the other hand, promised a "European" World Cup in Africa, playing on the north African nation's proximity to Europe.

Good news for New England soccer fans: The World Cup will more than likely be played at Gillette Stadium in 2026.

The United States will host 60 of the 80 games, including all of those in the latter stages, with Mexico and Canada each hosting ten.

The decision marked the first time that showed how each country had voted following accusations of corruption and double-dealing following the award of the 2018 tournament to Russian Federation and the 2022 competition to Qatar.

Of the 23 stadiums that comprised the bid, 17 are already prepared to host a World Cup match and only six would require some kind of renovation before welcoming the world.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino addressing Congress during the voting.

However, Nigeria's relationship with Morocco has improved over the years leading to a first presidential visit by a Nigerian leader to the North African country. He said it was too early to put a price tag on the upgrades.
