Canadian Grand Prix: Vettel takes 50th win and F1 championship lead

Canadian Grand Prix: Vettel takes 50th win and F1 championship lead

Defending four-time champion Briton Hamilton finished fifth, extending his run of points-scoring finishes to a record 32 races, but he slipped a point behind German Vettel in the title race.

It was the first win by a Ferrari on Circuit Gilles Villeneuve since Michael Schumacher's triumph in 2004.

Sebastian Vettel described Friday practice for the Canadian Grand Prix as "a disaster".

Over the expected finish line, after 70 laps, the gap between the pair was just 0.1s in the Finn's favour, however, the race was officially ended two laps early due to celebrity model Winnie Harlow waving the chequered flag prematurely.

There's much more scope for overtaking in Canada than there is at most Grands Prix, so Hamilton could still get on the podium or better if he does well on Sunday, but he'll need to find the kind of pace his rivals displayed so readily here. With a new engine upgrade fitted to Vettel's vehicle this weekend, Ferrari was expected to be one of the favourites in Canada but Vettel was not happy with his performance after he was restricted to just 17 laps in second practice due to auto issues at the start of the session.

Bottas finished second for the fourth time in seven races.

"I think they've waited long enough for Ferrari to do well here".

Valtteri Bottas was second in his Mercedes, about six seconds back.

"I was just anxious, I told them on the last lap, so people don't jump on the track, waving flags and celebrating, because we are still going at full pace".

"I was just anxious, I told them also on the last lap, then people don't jump on the track, waving flags and celebrating, because we're still going at full pace". "The celebrity was not to blame", FIA race director Charlie Whiting said. Establishing a team in IndyCar may suit the their American chief executive Zak Brown, but surely there are more pressing matters for Britain's most successful F1 team to deal with? Max Verstappen was third and the other Red Bull auto, driven by Daniel Ricciardo, was fourth. It was the same for Bottas running behind Vettel. "Ferrari have been doing the better job, particularly this month and their whole package has just been a little bit ahead of us".

The New Zealander appeared to be squeezed into the barriers as Stroll, with a puncture, moved sideways ahead of him at Turn Five and the Toro Rosso was lifted off the ground before both flew off the track.

The Safety Car was deployed in order to clear the wreckage while stewards opted to take no further action against either driver. I still believe that we can win. He earned his first Formula One points with a ninth-place finish at Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve past year. The Spaniard was forced out with engine trouble after 42 laps.
