Ontario Building Trades Council Congratulates Premier-elect Ford: Dillon

Ontario Building Trades Council Congratulates Premier-elect Ford: Dillon

"This is the busiest time of year for schools with culminating activities, EQAO testing and exams, and more than 6,000 teachers have made Student Vote a priority", said Taylor Gunn, President and CEO of CIVIX.

Horwath was pressed on the issue Friday and would only say that the decision was Ford's to make.

Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford.

Kathleen Wynne, the leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and the first openly gay premier in Canada, will step down from her post.

Many of her cabinet ministers have been defeated.

"The NDP has been flogging their carbon tax now for the past two years, spending, I think, $9 million tax dollars promoting it to Albertans", Kenney said.

Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault, a New Democrat turned Liberal, lost to the NDP's Jamie West in the Sudbury riding.

In 2014 on a YouTube show he bade with his late brother, ex-Toronto mayor Rob Ford, the new Ontario premier described Pride Toronto as an event where "middle-aged men with pot bellies" run around "buck naked".

The 53-year-old politician was elected party leader in March after Patrick Brown stepped down amid sexual harassment allegations he denies.

Ford also rolled out several pledges designed with populist appeal in mind, from cutting gas prices by 10 cents a litre to introducing buck-a-beer to cutting hydro bills.

It's not clear how Ford will fund his promises, as the party didn't release a fully costed plan. "We owe so much to Rob's legacy - a legacy of service to the people, a legacy started by my father Doug Ford Sr. and a legacy that will continue". The crowd booed again when news came that Horwath won her Hamilton riding.

After news outlets projected a PC majority government, Ford's religious right allies were vocal in praising the province's new leader and reminding him that they're waiting for him to repay his debts.

Since Confederation, Ontario voters have nearly always opted for a different party federally than the one they've chosen provincially - even when that's meant electing a premier and prime minister guaranteed to be at each other's throats.

She said she had stayed focused on her campaign throughout and was looking forward to leading the official Opposition.

People are exhausted and resources are thin following the campaign, he said, and the party would do better to bide its time.

In some ways, Ford's win echoes the rise of populism in countries such as Poland, Hungary and Italy, said Ian Lee, a professor at Carleton University.

The governing Liberals, who have been in power for the past 15 years, are fighting for survival following Premier Kathleen Wynne's stunning admission of defeat last week.

It's unlikely the NDP would support loosening the rules around party status considering they were denied a similar reprieve under the Liberals in 2003, Malloy said.

And now, registered voters in both counties can vote in any designated voting spot anywhere in their county.

As a result, Elections Ontario has extended voting hours in seven locations. "This election outcome addresses a number of key concerns in the business sector - a pause in minimum wage increases; a number of measures to address energy costs, most significantly scrapping the cap-and-trade program; and tax rate reductions", said Robert Kavcic, senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.
