Manafort Associate Konstantin Kilimnik Indicted In Mueller Probe

Manafort Associate Konstantin Kilimnik Indicted In Mueller Probe

Manafort's spokesman Jason Maloni said on Friday he was reviewing the new charges.

Neither Kilimnik nor a Manafort spokesman responded to messages seeking comment.

The additional charges could add to pressure on Manafort to cut a deal and cooperate with Mueller's probe, legal experts said.

Manafort joined Trump's presidential campaign in March 2016 to help wrangle delegates ahead of the Republican National Convention in OH, something he'd done for former President Gerald Ford. Kilimnik, who prosecutors say lives in Moscow, was not in US custody Friday.

Mueller said in a statement earlier this week the two men had tried to influence witnesses' accounts of Manafort's attempts to lobby on behalf of pro-Russian political parties in Ukraine.

One of the charges Manafort is facing is failing to properly register as a foreign agent.

Parts of the report that have surfaced in the media claim that Comey was "insubordinate" and faulted him for ignoring the DOJ's objections when he informed Congress in a letter weeks before the 2016 election that he was reopening the investigation into Clinton's emails. "We will do our talking in court", Maloni added.

Kilimnik, according to court papers, wrote a message to the other executive two days later saying: "Basically P wants to give him a quick summary that he says to everybody (which is true) that our friends never lobbied in the USA, and the objective of the program was European Union". "Manafort done it without registration or providing notification, as required by law", - stated in the text.

Manafort's attorneys countered that prosecutors presented "scant proof" - mostly "irrelevant, innocuous" texts, and one completed phone call of five attempts that lasted one minute and 24 seconds. The FBI assessed Kilimnik had active ties to Russia's military intelligence service in 2016, according to the filing.

Manafort is now on bail and awaiting trial.

The obstruction charges come just a week before Manafort is scheduled for a key hearing to determine whether he can remain free pending his trial in Washington on existing federal charges of money laundering and fraud. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges. The government wants Berman Jackson to rescind Manafort's bail and put him in jail ahead of his trial. It only triggers a rebuttable presumption of detention, but it will be up to Manafort's lawyers to persuade the judge that there exist conditions that could ensure that Manafort will stop committing further crimes, including further obstruction of justice.

Mr Mueller has yet to assert that Mr Manafort's Ukraine and Russian connections resulted in any election-meddling. John is Manafort's middle name, and Hannah is the middle name of that of his then-business partner, Rick Davis.

That would have been at the same time that Rick Gates, another Trump campaign aide, was communicating with him-and just weeks before the United States presidential election.

According to the witnesses, Manafort and Kilimnik appeared to be pressuring them to say the Hapsburg group only worked in Europe, when they knew that they had been secretly paid to lobby in the U.S. Several of the politicians involved have denied any wrongdoing. Kilimnik has denied such ties. "What you really care about is what information Mr. Manafort could give you that would reflect on Mr. Trump or lead to his prosecution or impeachment".

The timing of these fresh charges couldn't come at a more awkward time, with Mr Trump only this morning calling for the reinstatement of Russian Federation into the G-7.

In the case of the former Mr. Manafort reached out to suggest they talk about details of matters under investigation.

In 2006, the year he reportedly began working for [Russian oligarch Oleg] Deripaska, Manafort bought a condo in Trump Tower for $3,675,000 through an LLC called John Hannah.

Mr Kilimnik appears unlikely to face these new charges in court.
