Amazon's Fire TV Cube kills two birds with one stone

Amazon's Fire TV Cube kills two birds with one stone

The company has literally combined the Fire TV with the Amazon Echo and the result is a $120 Cube shaped device that bakes in Echo speaker and Fire TV (and a universal remote).

There are variety of common features between the Fire TV Cube and the Apple TV 4K, including 4K HDR video, digital assistant support, Dolby Atmos support, and HDMI CEC. The standard version comes with an IR extender cable, remote and an Ethernet adapter.

Amazon today, after several rumors and leaks launched the Fire TV Cube, a device which connects to your television and has built-in Alexa in it. You can use your voice to navigate and control Netflix, Prime Video or Hulu content, and believe it or not, the Alexa-powered Fire TV Cube handles not just compatible TVs, but also sound bars, A/V receivers, and set-top boxes from "top providers" like Comcast, Dish, and DirecTV. Otherwise, you may have to wait and hope that it is an Amazon Prime Day deal too. Remember, there are no particular key phrases you are required to use to command Alexa, it is a natural language understanding product. Now, the two products are converging in a way they haven't before, in the form of the Amazon Fire TV Cube.

'And, it's just the beginning.

The Cube lets you control almost all aspects of your television-watching experience using nothing but your voice.

"Tens of millions of customers around the world are already using Alexa, and today we're excited to introduce Alexa to our customers in France", said Jorrit Van der Meulen, Vice President, Amazon Devices International. Whether you need to check the status of your flight, consult departure and arrival times, or find out which services are available on board, all this will now be possible via the Alexa virtual assistant.

The Cube is up for preorder starting Thursday and will be widely available June 21. For example, you could set one up where you say, "Alexa, good morning", and the Cube turns on all the smart lights in your home, turns on the TV to your favorite news station, and perhaps even starts brewing some coffee in your internet-connected carafe.

Amazon has unveiled the latest addition to its Fire TV lineup.

Rumours about the Amazon Fire TV Cube surfaced in Autumn previous year but remained relatively under the radar until Amazon itself confirmed the device's existence in April.

Prenner says to stay tuned on those fronts. Share your views with us in the comments.
