'Best news ever!' Kim Kardashian's trip to the White House pays off

'Best news ever!' Kim Kardashian's trip to the White House pays off

One week after the Keeping Up star met up with President Donald Trump to seek clemency for Alice Johnson, a 63-year-old grandmother who has served nearly 22 years of a life sentence for a non-violent drug offense, the former Celebrity Apprentice host made a decision to honor Kardashian's request and pardon Johnson.

As for Kardashian West, Johnson said, "Kim, I love you".

The commutation puts a renewed focus on the Trump administration's push for prison and sentencing reform, but which has sometimes clashed with the president's law-and-order approach, especially at the Justice Department.

Johnson was jailed in 1996 with 15 others for taking part in a cocaine distribution ring.

Many prison reform advocates hoped that former President Barack Obama would grant Johnson clemency in the winter of 2016 because of Obama's commitment to overturn first time non-violent drug offenses.

Previous appeals to the US Supreme Court have been thrown out and court records show Johnson has a motion pending for a reduction in her sentence.

"She said, 'You can go home, you can go home now.' When I heard the word 'home, ' I started screaming and jumping and crying", Johnson said.

Kardashian West is also responding to the decision, tweeting "BEST NEWS EVER!".

Today Alice Marie Johnson spoke with Michael Strahan on Good Morning America from Memphis, Tennessee.

"My mother has accepted full responsibility for her actions and used that experience to better her life and the lives of others".

Johnson says she already has plans to work, wants to write plays and catch up where she left off. No matter what, you never let anyone else dictate your life!

Famed entertainment attorney, Shawn Holley, a lawyer for Kardashian West describes the moment Johnson found out President Donald Trump had commuted her sentence.

And yesterday Alice Marie Johnson ran out of the gates of the Alabama prison into the arms of her family. "Her commutation is inspirational & gives hope to so many others who are also deserving of a second chance", West tweeted. "Despite receiving a life sentence, Alice worked hard to rehabilitate herself in prison, and act as a mentor to her fellow inmates", the statement read.

Cameras captured Johnson's reunion with family members Wednesday night after a van transported her outside the prison.

She revealed, "I'm so happy, nothing bothers me".

Her co-defendants who testified against her at the time received sentences ranging from probation to 10 years, while Johnson received life with parole plus 25 years.
