Nadal loses first French Open set for three years

Nadal loses first French Open set for three years

Defending champion Rafael Nadal faced an anxious night after rain intervened with him trailing Argentina's Diego Schwartzman in his French Open quarter-final on Wednesday.

Looking at the bigger picture, Nadal hadn't ceded a set in Paris since 2015, when he lost to Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals.

The world No. 1 found himself a set and a break down to Diego Schwartzman, with his French Open hopes hanging in the balance, before rain initially stopped play.

A more serene start to the second set all changed when Nadal again dropped his serve at 1-1, and just as in the first while he recovered immediately, Schwartzman broke again for 3-2. Schwartzman saw two set points come and go but at the third time of asking, after a delay while a spectator was helped out after feeling ill, the Argentine ripped a forehand victor.

A rain delay before the 11th seed could cement the break would turn the set on its head - and after a half-hour break, Nadal won three games in a row, only interrupted when the poor weather returned with the top seed two points from levelling the match.

When they return to the stadium, Nadal will be serving at 5-3, 30-15 in the second set.

The Spaniard lost his first set at Roland Garros since 2015 before a one-hour rain delay halted play.

Rafa Nadal continued his birthday celebrations by moving into the French Open quarter-finals on Monday, beating a determined Maximilian Marterer 6-3 6-2 7-6 (4).

Two-time runner-up Halep came back from a set down for the second time in the tournament to see off 12th seed Kerber, who was bidding to become the first German woman in the last-four since Steffi Graf in 1999.

The Romanian broke serve six times against a player who made the semi-finals at the Australian Open in January.
