Quiz: How Well Would You Do In The National Spelling Bee?

But then the three-time Missoula County spelling bee champion will once again hit the books. Third place gets $20,000, fourth gets $10,000, fifth gets $5,000, and sixth will receive $2,500.

Karthik and his family lived in Bloomington-Normal from 2006 until late 2016, said family friend Jay Tummala of Normal. (AP Photo/Cliff Owen) Aisha Randhawa, 12, from Corona, Calif., reacts to spelling a word correctly in the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, May 31, 2018.

The past 13 champions and 18 of the last 22 have been Indian-American, and that trend could easily continue.

Karthik admits he did not know how to spell about eight or nine words that came up during the prime-time finals, but he did know "koinonia".

The bee ended in a tie for three consecutive years from 2014-2016, but that nearly certainly won't happen this year because the 16 finalists all took a written tiebreaker test.

Thursday had begun with 41 spellers who qualified for the finals after surviving what was arguably the most intense competition in the bee's 93-year history.

The cash prize for second place is $30,000. And several had appeared at the national bee in previous years.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is a three-day, nationally televised event in which more than 500 kids compete with one another to spell increasingly hard English words.

Karthik's victory Thursday night put the spotlight back onto the story of this bee week - the new wild-card program that Scripps launched to give a chance to spellers like him, who have to compete against some of the nation's best spellers at the local level.

After Sravanth Malla, 14, of Haverstraw, N.Y., misspelled "cento", the Bee was down to its final five competitors in round 12 of the competition overall.

She said she struggled with the "ae" because that's not normally seen in German.

Using the top searched "how to spell" words of each state, Google compiled a map that shows which words have given people the most pause in the US.

Karthik, for his part, took no extra satisfaction in vanquishing a familiar foe. Gordy correctly spelled "cadre" in round two but misspelled "philistinism" in round three.
