Kim Kardashian West meets Donald Trump to talk prison reform

Kim Kardashian West meets Donald Trump to talk prison reform

Instead, the reality star paid a visit to the White House Wednesday to request that President Donald Trump pardon Alice Johnson, a 62-year-old great-grandmother serving a life sentence without parole for a first-time drug offense.

Prison reform advocates argue that lengthy sentences issued during the height of America's so-called war on drugs for nonviolent charges are cruel and inhumane.

Johnson's story first caught the reality television star's eye after she saw a short video about the case posted on social media.

Jessica Jackson Sloan, national director of #cut50, an advocacy group calling for a reduction of the prison population, said in a statement, "We commend Ms. Kardashian-West for putting people over politics today".

President Donald Trump tweeted a photo of what he described as a "great meeting" with Kim Kardashian to talk about prison reform and sentencing. "And so far, the White House has been really receptive to my calls, and I'm grateful for that", she told Mic last month.

She was expected to meet with Jared Kushner, the president's adviser and son-in-law, who has led the Trump administration's efforts on criminal justice reform.

"We're grateful that Kim is using her platform to shine light on this issue", Ms. Barnett said in an interview. Her husband recently reactivated his account and has used it to profess his admiration for president Trump, drawing much criticism from the African American community in the U.S., but also praise from the president himself.

Kardashian West's meeting with Trump comes on the heels of her husband, Kanye West, expressing his support for the president on Twitter.

Johnson's daughters confirmed today's meeting to BBC News. She has been behind bars for more than two decades.

In response to such an initiative, President Trump tweeted, "Get a bill to my desk, and I will sign it".

Say what you will about the Kardashians (personally I find it almost impossible not to admire the hell out of the Kris Jenner Machine and their collective business acumen).

Johnson's case meets the criteria for clemency, but President Barack Obama passed over her case three times.

According to The Sun, the US president is said to be in favour of waiving Johnson's sentence after the move was backed by daughter Ivanka. "I made one of the worst decisions of my life to make some quick money - I became involved in a drug conspiracy".

In a hand-scrawled letter last June she wrote: "I'm a broken woman".
