North and South Korean leaders hold surprise meeting

North and South Korean leaders hold surprise meeting

President Moon Jae-in attended an unannounced, hurriedly arranged meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the northern side of the demilitarized zone Saturday afternoon, their second meeting in a month, as the diplomatic rollercoaster over a Kim-Donald Trump meeting took another surprising turn.

"The world and North Korea has lost a tremendous opportunity for lasting peace and great prosperity and wealth".

President Donald Trump waves while walking away after speaking to the media, as he walks to the Marine One helicopter on Friday.

While the president did not detail the nature of the new U.S. communication with the North on Friday, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said at the Pentagon, "The diplomats are still at work on the summit, possibility of a summit, so that is very good news".

The comments on the summit with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un came just a day after Trump canceled the meeting, citing Pyongyang's "open hostility".

Earlier on Friday, Trump told reporters the United States and North Korea still wanted to arrange a landmark meeting between the two leaders.

Mr Trump declared his military was "ready" for battle and boasted America's "massive" nuclear capabilities, amid rising tensions between the two states.

The White House has not yet responded to a request for comment on the meeting.

The Korean leaders met for two hours and figured out ways to make the U.S.

Kim Kye-gwan, who threatened to cancel the U.S. It came as a complete surprise: The two leaders had not been expected to meet again until the autumn.

A White House team will leave as scheduled for Singapore this weekend to prepare for the possible summit, a White House spokeswoman said on Saturday.

Add North Korea as an interest to stay up to date on the latest North Korea news, video, and analysis from ABC News.

That planned summit with North Korea: dead & buried, right?

If the summit plans follows through, it would be the first time a sitting U.S. president and North Korean leader would meet.

"They committed to remaining closely coordinated in all of their efforts to create conditions for dialogue with North Korea and agreed that must continue until North Korea embraces denuclearization", Nauert said in a statement. But it did play the major role in organizing Pompeo's two trips to Pyongyang, once as Central Intelligence Agency director and once as secretary of state.

Moon, who has been a mediator between Trump and Kim, called an emergency meeting in the middle of the night after Trump called off the June summit in a letter to Kim.

Analysts say Kim's diplomatic outreach in recent months after a flurry of nuclear and missile tests in 2017 indicates he is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and the worldwide legitimacy the summit with Trump would provide.

Trump said they are still considering June 12 in Singapore for the summit with Kim Jong Un.

He was not informed of the decision before Mr Trump's announcement, reports said.

"Whether it was to maintain good will with the South, or whether it was the case that they realized, "Our great leader wants to move ahead with summit, and perhaps our language put that in jeopardy" is unclear, he said.
