US sanctions Iran central bank governor for terrorist support

US sanctions Iran central bank governor for terrorist support

It also blacklisted Ali Tarzali, assistant director of the worldwide department of Iran's central bank, and chairman of Al-Bilad Islamic Bank, Aras Habib.

"The United States will not permit Iran's increasingly brazen abuse of the worldwide financial system". He's being named a "specially designated global terrorist".

Tuesday's action seeks to cut off what the United States called a "critical" banking network for Iran, and deny that blacklisted access to the global financial system.

The U.S. Treasury Department also issued economic sanctions against another top official, in addition to Seif.

The move comes a week after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States was pulling out of the nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

Valiollah Seif, the governor of the Iranian central financial institution, was named a "specifically designated global terrorist" together with one other senior official, Ali Tarzali, who works within the central financial institution's worldwide division. Seif frequently visits Washington to attend meetings of the International Monetary Fund. Any transactions that involve his signature could potentially run afoul of the sanctions, creating a strong deterrent to foreign governments or businesses considering transactions involving Iran's central bank. He has worked with Hizballah.

The U.S. said it would also sanction Seif; they are secondary sanctions, which means if someone does business with him, they could be cut off from the U.S. financial system, the Associated Press pointed out.

The US said that the sanctions on Seif did not extend to Iran's central bank itself.

The Trump Administration has announced a new round of sanctions against Iran's financial institutions today, and singled out a handful of individuals, including the Iranian Central Bank's governor, as a "terrorist" for his banking activities.

"The Iranian regime's deployment into Syria of offensive rocket and missile systems aimed at Israel is an unacceptable and highly risky development for the entire Middle East", the statement said. The European members of the deal are attempting to maintain it alive with out the U.S. But it is unclear that will likely be workable, as a result of Trump has vowed to punish European firms that proceed doing enterprise with Iran regardless of re-imposed U.S. sanctions.
