Taliban launch huge assault on western Afghan city

Taliban launch huge assault on western Afghan city

But the defence ministry said the army had repulsed the attack, and "the security forces are now chasing the enemy".

The battle was underway in several areas of the city, Abdul Shakoor, a resident of the Bagh-e-Pul area, told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday morning.

Attackers overran several security checkpoints in the city, and heavy fighting was under way on Tuesday, provincial official Fared Bakhtawer said.

"Government reinforcements have arrived including around 100 commando forces".

At least some militants have been hiding in residential houses, making it hard for Afghan forces to use heavy weapons, Farah governor Abdul Basir Salangi told Ariana News, adding: "But still we are taking back positions one by one". Taliban militants launched a major offensive at around 2.40 a.m. from northern and western neighbourhood of Farah, in a coordinated effort to seize full control of the city, an official told Xinhua news agency.

"There is no danger of Farah city collapsing into the hands of Taliban", said Danish. "The situation is very bad", Satar Hissaini, a tribal elder in Farah, told Agence France-Presse.

At least some militants have been hiding in private houses, making it hard for Afghan forces to use heavy weapons, Farah governor Abdul Basir Salangi told Ariana News, adding: "But still we are taking back positions one by one". The Taliban had captured a police district on the city's edge, he said.

Afghan security forces have struggled to combat the Taliban and IS since the US and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation formally concluded their combat role in the country in 2014, shifting to a support and counterterrorism mission.

Inamullah Miakhial, a Nangarhar hospital spokesman, also confirmed the dead toll and said that more than 40 wounded people are undergoing treatment at the hospital.

Earlier in May, Taliban fighters attacked Afghan bases in the province, killing more than 40 police officers and servicemen.

According to Salangi the Taliban failed to capture the NDS directorate, Farah prison, police headquarters or "other key organizations and "soon they will be thwarted from the city".

The fighting adds to the growing number of crisis points around Afghanistan since the Taliban began their annual spring offensive last month, including a series of deadly suicide attacks in the capital, Kabul.

Despite security concerns, the Taliban have pledged to cooperate with the gas project.

Farah has been the scene of intense fighting in recent years. Officials have warned of a deteriorating security situation as insurgents have entered the capital several times.
