Malaysia bars scandal-ridden ex-leader from leaving country

Malaysia bars scandal-ridden ex-leader from leaving country

Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamad on Monday said he will replace the country's attorney general and anti-corruption chief, as officials stepped up a probe into alleged widespread graft in the Barisan Nasional government defeated in last week's general election.

Mahathir confirmed that he prevented Najib from departing. He has said Najib will have to face a court if any wrongdoing is found.

Najib has denied any wrongdoing and said the money was a donation from the Saudi royal family, which he had since returned.

"I respect this instruction and will stay in the country with my family", he said.

Later Saturday, Najib told a news conference that he was stepping down with immediate effect as president of the United Malays National Organisation as well as chairman of the National Front coalition. In his earlier statement on social media, Najib said he was committed to "facilitating a smooth transfer of power". Dzulkifli Ahmad was appointed by Najib in 2016.

The National Front obtained only 79 of the 222 parliamentary seats, losing power to a four-party opposition alliance headed by veteran politician Mahathir Mohamad. "Some of these things may involve the ministries and the personnel themselves, so we need people who are not involved to be getting and studying reports made either by ministries or by certain bodies which we will consult". "Maybe this will be an opportunity for us to fix our weaknesses and shortcomings, although these are more a matter of perceptions than reality", he said.

But the 92-year-old - the world's oldest elected leader - added that "action" would be taken if false news was disseminated with the intention to cause chaos.

Sedia Disiasat (Ready To Be Investigated) - The former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, is ready to be investigated on any issues related prior the 14th General Election (GE14) as Harian Metro frontpaged that Khalid and the former Attorney General Tan Sri Apandi Ali will similarly be investigated in the 1MDB scandal.

During his previous time in power Mahathir was known for being highly critical of USA policy in Asia and in particular, he won praise throughout the developing countries of the wider Muslim world for frequently shaming the U.S. policy of hostility towards Muslim majority countries in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia.

He gave no reasons for the authorities' decision, but said he would abide by it.

While Mahathir's former protege turned political enemy Anwar Ibrahim is on the road to a full political rehabilitation after Mahathir followed through on his promise to ask Malaysia's Monarch to grant the jailed Anwar a full pardon, the real movers and shakers of the new coalition will be the members of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) for they represent the clearest break with the past for Malaysian politics.

One of its leaders over the weekend said Mahathir had failed to consult the party when he offered the interior, defence, and finance portfolios to leaders of other parties.

Also Saturday, Mahathir appointed Lim Guan Eng, an ethnic Chinese, as finance minister, the first ethnic minority to be appointed to the powerful post in 44 years. They were used to buy support for (former prime minister) Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.
