Jerusalem Soccer Club Embraces Trump Name Eschewed by Others

Some had American flags, while banners celebrating US President Donald Trump were hung by a pro-Israel evangelical Christian organisation. At least 30 countries are sending representatives, mostly from Africa, Latin America and eastern Europe.

But Netanyahu insisted the embassy move is "the right thing to do" and ordered other countries to follow suit.

Abbas, who for years had banked on the U.S. to persuade Israel to cede land for a Palestinian state, felt betrayed and halted contacts with the Trump administration.

He is also addressing the issue of security, saying the U.S. has taken steps "to ensure that not only are governmental interests but the American people in that region are secure as well, and we're comfortable we've taken action that reduces that risk".

Hamas" political chief Ismail Haniya arrives in Cairo to discuss "developments' in Palestine and the region. Although they did not manage to reach civilian areas, the infiltrations caught Israel off guard, with one attack killing five soldiers, and terrified the local population. No details of the proposal have been confirmed, though Palestinian officials, citing information from Saudi intermediaries, suspect it's an offer for a Gaza-based mini-state with parts of the West Bank and a small foothold in Jerusalem.

Israel annexed east Jerusalem in a move not recognised internationally.

This year's celebration took on added significance due to the embassy move the following day.

Although Trump has said his declaration does not set the final borders of the city, his recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital has been perceived by both Israel and the Palestinians as taking Israel's side in the most sensitive issue in their conflict. He said the USA "is there to help the Palestinians" and "there is no basis" to think the embassy move will work against peace. The Palestinian leadership rejected Washington's traditional role as a mediator following Trump's Jerusalem decision.

"The reason is simple: For over 3,000 years it has been the capital of our people, and only of our people". The Israeli military said the crowd had grown violent and that troops were defending the border.

Additionally, police officers will stand in a "human wall" between the neighbourhood of Arnona, where the new embassy is located, and the Palestinian Sur Baher, the police said.

"It was really just us, it was our family that was there", she said.

A number of Palestinian shop owners in the Old City said they planned to close when the march passed through in case anyone tried to vandalise their shops, as had occurred in the past.

The timing of the embassy move has led to concerns about increased tension in Gaza.

A Palestinian was killed and 175 were wounded by Israeli army fire on Friday.

Late Saturday, the military carried out several airstrikes in the northern Gaza strip, near the Erez border crossing, to destroy a Hamas tunnel that was being built there.

A high-ranking delegation of Gaza's Hamas rulers headed to Egypt on Sunday, amid diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the mass rally.

His decision to move operations from Tel Aviv angered Palestinians.

It was not immediately clear from Ambassador David Friedman's remarks, on a call with reporters, whether Mr Trump will speak via a live videolink or a pre-recorded address.

He told Fox News the United States "is there to help the Palestinians" and "there is no basis" to think the embassy move will work against peace.
