Emperor meets with Chinese Premier Li in Tokyo

He stressed that the creation of the China-Japan-South Korea free trade zone would "benefit not only East Asia, but also [would] have an external effect and stimulate negotiations on regional economic integration between the three countries and ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations]".

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe also welcomed a string of business commitments from China, including a RMB 200 billion ($31.4 billion) investment quota for Japan investors to buy Chinese stocks.

Forty years later, the two sides should continue to follow the spirit of the treaty, said the premier.

Abe, who rolled out the red carpet for Li at Akasaka Palace, a state guest house in the west of the city, said Li's visit marked a fresh start for bilateral ties.

Premier Li Keqiang (C) meets with some of the former Japanese politicians who had participated in the process of making the China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship in Tokyo, Japan, on May 10, 2018.

Talks on the hotline had stalled in 2012, after the Japanese government bought the disputed islands, known in Tokyo as the Senkaku, and in Beijing as the Diaoyu, from a private landowner.

"The volume of trade in the China-Japan-South Korea zone is 23 percent of the global trade turnover, while in the European Union and NAFTA the figure stands at 21 percent and 27 percent, respectively".

The two sides also signed on Wednesday a series of memorandum on service trade and third-party market cooperation among others.

In addition, Li was granted a meeting with Japanese Emperor Akihito, a rare friendly gesture from Japan.

At a reception marking the 40th anniversary of the treaty in Tokyo, Li said, this is the best possible way to commemorate the signing of China-Japan Treaty of Peace and Friendship, Xinhua reported. They can work jointly in innovation and high-end manufacturing as well as in the financial industry, the premier noted.

"Cooperation will be good for both China and Japan, as long as it's honest".
