Microsoft brings more AI smarts to the edge

Microsoft brings more AI smarts to the edge

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is trying to distinguish the business technology giant from its technology brethren by focusing on digital privacy. There will also be a livestream available through dedicated Build 2018 website. The company will also make announcements related to its Windows 10 operating system at the event as a new update already has been rolled out for Windows 10 devices.

The five-year initiative will include seed grants for startups, nonprofit organizations and academic researchers, as well as deeper investments and expertise from Microsoft researchers. The company says that connected smart devices are taking over homes and businesses globally with over 20 billion devices expected by 2020. This will allow devices such as drones to take important actions without connecting to the cloud.

First up, Microsoft is opening up the Azure Internet of Things Edge Runtime, which will allow developers to modify and customize applications at the edge. Microsoft FarmBeats integrates DJI's PC Ground Station Pro software and mapping algorithm to create real-time heatmaps on Azure IoT Edge. Using applications written for Windows 10 PCs, DJI drones can be customized and controlled for a wide variety of industrial uses, with full flight control and real-time data transfer capabilities, making drone technology accessible to Windows 10 customers numbering almost 700 million globally. As part of the commercial partnership, DJI and Microsoft will co-develop solutions leveraging Azure IoT Edge and Microsoft's AI services to enable new scenarios across agriculture, construction, public safety and more. The Windows Machine Learning platform will help developers develop machine learning models in the Intelligent Cloud and deploy them offline and in high performance to the PC platform, Microsoft said. While the Kinect never really lived up to its promise in video games, it was an instant smash hit with hobbyists and hackers.

A technological marvel it may have been, but the Microsoft Kinect sensor failed to deliver on its promise to revolutionise the Xbox experience. But it's nice to see that Microsoft is still actively developing on the Kinect platform. Microsoft says it's a piece of hardware with a "small and powerful form factor".
