Top US lawmaker voices doubt about NK denuclearization

During the negotiations, the two men signed a joint declaration agreeing to take measures to support worldwide efforts aimed at the "complete denuclearization" of the Korean Peninsula and proceed with reunion programs for separated Korean families.

"It may also be that they have conducted enough nuclear tests, enough missile tests, that they're pretty confident with their capabilities", he said, commenting on North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's recent willingness to discuss denuclearization with the USA and South Korean leaders.

Although Trump has placed considerable faith in South Korean leader Moon's efforts to patch up relations with North Korea, the US president has long complained that South Korea does not do enough to financially support the American military commitment.

"It is the arrogance of outsiders to suggest that the North Koreans are debating or talking to us because of either Trump-ian pressure on the right or [South Korean President] Moon's liberal engagement on the left".

There is no certainty that Seoul and Washington would see eye-to-eye on this issue much less between Washington and Pyongyang.

Kim and Mr Trump are expected to meet later this month or in early June.

"Strength is going to keep us out of nuclear war, not get us in", Trump told a rally in Washington, Michigan.

M - North Korea has changed time zone to match the South after last week's inter-Korean summit, BBC reports.

"We have the time and place all finished", said Trump on Saturday at a meeting in Ohio. Kim also pledged to close its nuclear test site this month and invited U.S. experts and journalists to verify the move.

Trump's recent remarks have heightened expectations that he could choose the border village over other alternatives, such as Singapore and Mongolia.

"I have no doubt their hope is to divide us from our allies in South Korea, to ease some of the sanctions, to ease the pressure coming from China so that they are not so isolated in the world", he said. That's where Kim met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in last Friday - a summit that has paved the way for the US president's planned face-to-face with Kim.

"This third summit between the two leaders affirms the enduring strength of the United States-Republic of Korea alliance and the deep friendship between our two countries", White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said.

Two U.S. ex-presidents have traveled to North Korea: Jimmy Carter in 1994, 2010 and 2011 and Bill Clinton in 2009.
