Pakistan's twin coal mine accidents claim 23 lives, injure 6 people

Pakistan's twin coal mine accidents claim 23 lives, injure 6 people

A coal mine in Marwar area of Balochistan, which is located 45 kilometres east of Quetta, collapsed due to an explosion caused by the accumulation of methane gas, killing 16 workers while injuring nine others.

Rescue officials said a dozen of the dead miners belonged to Shangla district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Mine inspector Iftikhar Ahmed said five more bodies had been recovered from one of the mines.

The death toll has risen to 23 due to collapse of two coalmines in two separate incidents near Quetta, reported Radio Pakistan.

Shahwani said 25 workers were inside the mine when the explosion occurred, adding that all the injured miners had been rescued and taken to the hospital. An additional seven people died in a separate blast Saturday, which also wounded two people.

Provincial mines minister Saleh Baloch told AFP that all miners in both accidents had been accounted for and rescue operations had ended.

The poor safety conditions in the Pakistani mines makes them prone to accidents.

"The collapse apparently took place because of a gas explosion and the miners working at that time were trapped inside. Some died on the spot, while others who were badly injured breathed their last under the rubble", Mr. Atique said.

At least 30 labours were present inside the mine when the blast occurred.

In 2015 and 2016, seven miners died in a similar explosion in Balochistan's Dukki area and eight in an explosion in Doli area of the Orakzai Agency, respectively.
