Oculus Go preorders open - and sell out - ahead of F8 kick-off

Oculus Go preorders open - and sell out - ahead of F8 kick-off

Evidence is piling up that Facebook-owned Oculus is gearing up to launch its low-priced, standalone virtual reality headset Oculus Go, possibly as soon as later today. The Oculus Go headset has been officially launched today and it's now available for purchase in 23 countries across the globe.

Unlike the established Oculus Rift, also made by the Facebook-owned company, the Oculus Go is a headset that does not require an external PC source. It's a two-day event with more than 5,000 developers in attendance, and we suspect Facebook will reveal more about the Oculus Go as the day goes on.

Oculus has confirmed that there are over 1,000 apps for Oculus Go owners out of the gate.

According to leaks ahead of the announcement, it was clear that something big was going to happen at Facebook's F8 keynote speech. On the outside, it resembles some of the VR headsets on the market that rely on a connecting smartphone for their brains and/or screens, such as Google's Daydream View. The Go, unlike the Rift or the Gear VR, doesn't need to be tethered to another device. Now it's listed as "Currently Unavailable" and Amazon won't take any more orders, though the retailer will notify you when that changes. There is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor under the hood, spatial audio, and there is an integrated microphone as well.

Battery Life: 1.5-2 hours for gaming, or 2-2.5 for video-watching.

A 32GB version will cost $199 and a 64GB retails for $249.

Because the Go is standalone, apps will be downloaded directly to the headset.

Perhaps Zuckerberg will find solace in the virtual worlds he can explore on the Go, far from lawmakers, investors, and Facebook commenters.
