Lion park owner mauled by lion recovering in hospital

Lion park owner mauled by lion recovering in hospital

After coming from the United Kingdom to South Africa in 1999, Mike and Chrissy Hodge started off with their Lion project in 2003 out on a farm 30kms from Thabazimbi.

A graphic video posted on the News24 website on Tuesday shows Hodge running for a gate when the lion runs toward him.

Hodge entered the lion compound to investigate the culprit of a foul smell causing discomfort to one of the lions, according to a friend of the wildlife park owner.

Mike is recuperating in the hospital having sustained injuries to his neck and jaw, according to South African police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe.

The injured man is believed to have set up the "predator park" in 2003 after emigrating to Thabazimbi from the United Kingdom in the late 1990s.

Onlookers can be heard screaming for help as the lion swings at Hodge, who then appears motionless at that point.

An elderly man was mauled by a huge male lion at a wildlife park in a shocking incident caught on film. He was rushed to the Mediclinic Hospital just three miles away from the park, where he remains in intensive care.

A friend who did not want to be named told the Sun Online: "He is no fool around lions and knows how to interact with them but clearly something went wrong".

They moved to South Africa in 1999 and started a lion conservation project in 2003 on a farm 30kms from Thabazimbi.

Visitors to the park are able to watch animals being fed up close, with at least a dozen big cats living on the property.

A video of the incident was also shot by onlookers, where Hodge could be first seen entering the animal's enclosure and then trying to run away from it.

Mr Hodge was rescued after a gun was sacked, causing the lion to drop him and run away. So basically because of this mans stupidity, this fantastic animal has been killed!'
