Alfie Evans, sick toddler at centre of end-of-life debate, dies

Alfie Evans, sick toddler at centre of end-of-life debate, dies

His father, Tom Evans, also posted on his personal Facebook page.

Although Italian officials earlier this week granted Alfie citizenship and a Vatican-linked hospital offered to take the toddler for further diagnosis and treatment, United Kingdom courts repeatedly refused to allow the transfer, ruling that it is not in the child's best interest. "That's something that we have to look at because the parental rights can not be usurped".

The High Court ruled in favour of hospital bosses on 20 February, after accepting medical evidence that there was "no hope" for Alfie.

Hundreds of heartbroken supporters gathered to pay tribute to Alfie Evans, the "warrior" toddler who passed away today. Nobody could have fought a tougher battle for Alfie.

Above all, we must thank Tom and Kate for their unstinting love of their son, and the staff at Alder Hey Hospital for their professional care of Alfie. My thoughts and prayers are with them and their family.

Pope Francis had been publicly praying and advocating for the 23-month-old boy, and the Italian government offered the child citizenship and created a plan to take the boy to a Vatican hospital.

Alfie's fight for treatment drew support from around the world, including from Pope Francis.

This has been a devastating journey for them and we would ask that their privacy and the privacy of staff at Alder Hey is respected.

"Moved by the prayers and vast solidarity shown little Alfie Evans, I renew my appeal that the suffering of his parents may be heard and that their desire to seek new forms of treatment may be granted", he said on Twitter Monday. Karen & I are praying for comfort and peace for his parents, Katie & Tom, during this incredibly hard time.

Tom and Kate, my heart goes out to you both. "We are thinking of you and will always remember your lovely boy Alfie Evans", wrote Brooke Ewing.

"I know the date and time my child is going to die and we haven't even had time as a family to come to terms with this".

The basic dynamic is like the Gard and Evans and McMath cases but with the generational roles reversed: Instead of parents trying to pry their children away from the medical establishment, you have adult children unable to bring their parents home because their state-appointed guardians say no.

In an earlier statement published on April 12, Alfie's mother Kate James wrote, "How sad is it that someone can tell you where and when your child is going to die?"
