Iran nuclear deal 'best way' to stop threat - UK, France and Germany

Iran nuclear deal 'best way' to stop threat - UK, France and Germany

Britain, France and Germany reaffirmed their backing for the Iran nuclear deal, despite Donald Trump's threat to walk away.

Merkel's quick trip came the same week as a three-day state visit by French President Emmanuel Macron, who, like Merkel, pressed Trump on trade and urged him to keep the United States in a multi-national nuclear deal with Iran.

The statement comes after Merkel met with Trump, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Theresa May over the past three days.

Trump has threatened to leave the deal, which was negotiated by the previous Obama Administration.

Commenting on Tehran's warning that it will withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty if Washington scraps the Iran nuclear deal, United States political analyst Alexander Azadegan told Sputnik that the Islamic Republic should tread carefully on the issue.

Negotiators among the United States as well as the three European powers have been working to try to finesse these issues so as to keep the USA in the agreement without driving Iran - which opposes any changes to the deal - out of it. In late January 2018, he intensified his rhetoric, asking the Congress to address the flaws in the "terrible Iran nuclear deal" and threatening to pull out of it otherwise.

"This is wrong. The deal clearly states that missiles can not have nuclear charges and Iran complies with this requirement".

Bolton's comments came as new Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Israel, where he said Trump would exit the accord if the U.S. administration "can't fix it".

Trump is due to decide by May 12 whether to reimpose nuclear-related sanctions on Tehran, putting in peril the landmark 2015 accord, which most world powers see as key to preventing Tehran from getting the bomb.

Merkel said the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as a first step, has contributed to slowing down Iran's activities with regard to acquiring nuclear weapons.

In 2015 the U.S. and other nations struck a deal with Iran to end a 12-year standoff over that country's nuclear program.
